The Video:
In a genre that has become as overpopulated as the gritty urban streets it represents, terms like "classic" and "legendary" seem to be tossed around a little too much in hip-hop. There are a few names: Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, KRS-1, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, for which such labels are undeniable. What is also undeniable is that many of these acts have the classic and innovative hip-hop radio shows to thank for their status. Since 1990, the globally syndicated Wake Up Show hosted by Sway and King Tech is one of these classic programs. Kam Moye (formerly Supastition) and Tajai of Souls of Mischief were invited to be a part of the lauded hip-hop show's latest endeavor, the "2010 Wake Up Show Anthem".
Kam Moye and Tajai join the Wu's RZA, Crooked I, Cypress Hill's B-Real, Ras Kass, Tech N9ne and Locksmith take turns blessing and cursing the beat creating a virtual concert of holy fire. Not to be outdone, DJ Revolution, Q-Bert, Jazzy Jeff and King Tech himself cut wax to ribbons bringing the focus back on one of the original elements of hip-hop. The clip itself (complete with a video intro from the Notorious B.I.G.) is history in the making.
The video also includes clips of past Wake Up Shows showcasing an encyclopedic list of hip-hop talent that has graced the airwaves with Sway and Tech. If only we could convince the storied duo to use their expansive rolodex and craft a full length of this caliber, the world would remember the stark difference between hip-hop and hip-pop. Hip-hop fans across the globe have more than enough reason go celebrate The Wake Up Show, and with the 2010 anthem, there's just a little more reason to give this duo the respect they deserve.
