The Song:

Fly Gypsy is riding the momentum gained off their latest release, The Vodka & Rum Mixtape, by releasing a new song from the project, "Interview" featuring 2Pac. This track marks a change for Fly Gypsy – while a number of songs on the mixtape covered light-hearted material, "Interview" has a deep-rooted and politically conscious message to it. The song starts off with a news broadcast speaking about unemployment and other economic hardships that we are currently facing as a country mashed up with "bling" rap lyrics that portray the complete opposite. The message is apparent from the get go: Too much hip-hop focuses on the materialism, while more serious topics often fall by the wayside. The first few lines portray the tone of the song clearly, "Another drug dealer sellin' raps again, another drug dealer sellin' crack again, I'm not for hatin' or complainin', I just want somethin' better so I change the station."

Kowboy Komand Alexei Jendayi both bring their A-game lyrically and musically as the track inspires and awakens at the same time. Kom had this to say about the track: "It’s a reality check, a reminder and a warning all in one. I think its seriousness brought some necessary balance to the project. Fly Gypsy is very well rounded musically and topic-wise so beyond having fun for most of this album we wanted to lend a voice to these very current and very serious challenges that so many people in and from the streets are facing everyday." The production by Alexei creates the perfect backdrop for Kom to do his thing. 2Pac's chosen verse seamlessly fits the track as well with lines like, "No fairytales for this young black male, some see me stranded in this land of hell, jail and crack sales..." you would think 2Pac heard the beat and laid down his verse on the spot. Fly Gypsy shows and proves that being politically conscious is relevant and necessary, especially in current times.

The Background:

The much talked-about hip-hop duo Fly Gypsy made its first splash in late 2008 with an election-themed single that introduced the duo's energetic, guitar-driven sound to music fans around the world. The group formally launched in July 2009, with the release of the summertime single "You." The video for the single was shot in Jamaica by Ras Kassa (acclaimed for his work with Sean Paul, Beenie Man, and Damian Marley). Founded by the Russian-born producer and songwriter, Alexei Jendayi, and the Jamaican-born emcee, Kowboy Kom, Fly Gypsy has become an instant favorite among fans, developing a growing following thanks to its infectious beats, catchy hooks, and polished image. Music critics, meanwhile, have praised the Washington, D.C.-based duo for their ability to attract commercial appeal without compromising their musicianship or message, comparing the duo to the Fugees, Jay-Z, and Kanye West. The group's latest work, The Vodka and Rum Mixtape is available now, everywhere.
