Many of us grew up with Tone Loc providing the soundtrack of our adolescence. With much loved hits like "Wild Thing" under his belt, Tone Loc solidified his place in party-music history. Now why would renowned Baltimore DJ Aaron LaCrate want to change something that seems so right? Because my friends, change (especially when Aaron LaCrate is involved) is a good thing.
"Funky Cold Medina," in its original version, is a well-preserved snap shot of late '80s/early '90s hip hop- complete with spandex, big hair, and layers of dookie gold chains. Hip-hop's "Love Potion Number 9" has been long overdue for an update. Enter Aaron LaCrate. Spinning since age 10, LaCrate's beats "cater to a cross section in club culture, combining the most infectious elements of dance, house, hip-hop, Miami bass, and crunk - into an addictive mix of head nodding, bass thumping, booty clapping, doo doo browning, repetitive insanity" (AMOnly.com). His revved-up version of "Funky Cold Medina" with the help of Debonair Samir is no exception. In this track he strips down the beat to its bare bones, then decks it out with irresistible claps, synths, and samples that will have you reminiscing of the days of old in no time.
The video remains classic, chronicling the misadventures of Tone as he tries his luck with the mystery love-juice. His meeting with the modern-day medicine man who hooks him up with the first helping of Funky Cold Medina is set in dimly lit club packed with ladies hooked on that smoking green sauce. Tone takes the concoction home and doses his pooch, who is instantly transformed into the most eligible bachelor on he block. Tone fails to find love with the help of his drank and goes home empty handed, but the we leave with a few laughs and an old favorite brought back to life thanks again to the auditory evolutions of Delicious Vinyl's RMXXOLOGY.
