The Video:

Today, Jarren Benton is releasing his official debut album, My Grandmas Basement. As the newest member of Funk Volume, the independent powerhouse label also home to back-to-back XXL Freshmen Dizzy Wright and Hopsin, along with SwizZz and DJ Hoppa, Benton has built a serious bit of buzz for the new album — the two lead singles from My Grandmas Basement have combined for over 475,000 YouTube views; pre-orders for the album are in the thousands. Now, Benton is celebrating the album release with a video for new single “Go Off,” a track that fittingly features Benton’s Funk Volume label mates Hopsin and SwizZz.

The track, produced by M16, is a dark, thumping affair that builds furiously from verse to chorus, and the three rappers attack the beat with ferocity, starting with Jarren’s rapid-fire opening verse, as he attacks haters and doubters and celebrates being different and the success of the tight-knit label. “You couldn’t fathom my pain,” raps Jarren in the track’s refrain. “I hated being me, I was mad at my brain/ All the hope that I felt made me sad and insane/ Look back, like God, I was glad I felt strange.”

The video, which was directed by Hopsin and filmed by George Orozco of On Point Films, is staking claim as one of the most original, entertaining videos of the year, with raucous performance shots of Jarren, SwizZz, and Hopsin interspersed with some wild shots of Jarren and Hopsin — both of whom are dressed in white-face; Hopsin is dressed like a woman — acting a fool in the local trailer park.

Jarren Benton Background:

For an artist with serious mainstream aspirations, Decatur, Georgia’s Jarren Benton has spent his career going against the grain. One of Funk Volume’s premiere acts, Jarren admits, “I love the music I do now. I do it in the safe-mode.” That’s rather shocking for an artist whose last album, Freebasing With Kevin Bacon lived up to its name, at least in attitude and style, evident on single “Skitzo.” He continues, “I want to take it a lil’ further. I just haven’t had the balls to go all the way there yet, ‘cause I presently want to keep a foot in the mainstream too.” After two successful digital releases and a video with over one million YouTube plays, Jarren is prepping the June 11th release of his Funk Volume debut, My Grandmas Basement.

Funk Volme Background:

Funk Volume is a record label, marketing and production company founded to give hip hop artists a home to freely express themselves without feeling controlled or pressured by any other outside forces. Currently home to Hopsin, SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton and DJ Hoppa, Funk Volume’s plan is to represent only the sickest, most talented, and most creative artists that we can find. The label’s objective is to produce music that it feel competes with any other artists or labels in the industry. Funk Volume is not a “movement”, not a “gang”, not a “squad.” Funk Volume is a commitment – to protect the integrity of the music and conduct our business properly. It is a commitment to hip-hop, to its fans, and to each other.
