Video: Nash Overstreet & Sidnie Tipton – “Animal” from Step Up: High Water

The Latest Timbaland-Produced Highlight From the Season 2 Soundtrack is the Song Behind One of the YouTube/Lionsgate Series’ Most Epic Dance Scenes

The Video:

Music is an integral character in Step Up: High Water, providing a window into characters’ subconsciouses, and just as importantly, soundtracking the series’ thrilling dance scenes.A massive and expansive pop song sung by Nash Overstreet (of the band Hot Chelle Rae) and Sidnie Tipton, “Animal soundtracks one such climactic dance scene and advances character development in equal measure. Produced by Timbaland, “Animal” has a cavernous sound–reverbed African drums pound a massive beat, as subterranean bass rumbles underneath, until the song opens up for a visceral bass drop in the chorus. A highlight from the Step Up: High Water, Season 2 (Original Soundtrack), “Animal” plays a major role in the fourth episode of High Water‘s recently released second season, as pop star Sage Odom (portrayed by Ne-Yo) attempts to get his backup dancers to ramp up the sexuality in their performances. The song recurs as each member of the dance crew attempts to channel their sexuality, culminating in an intense dance number at the end of the episode. The new lyric video tells the story of the episode in miniature, following the dancers as they unleash the “animal” in their professional and private lives.

Says Timbaland, “‘Animal’ is a sexy pop song that Sidnie and Nash killed in the studio. This song mirrors the same swagger and attitude the characters are trying to achieve in their dancing.”

With musical direction and production from Timbaland and musical supervision from EMMY-award nominee Jen Malone (Atlanta), Step Up: High Water, Season 2 (Original Soundtrack) is diverse and dramatic, providing an important element to the series with songs that work equally well in and out of context. “Animal” follows the recent videos for “Take The Throne,” which shows the motivations of lead character Rigo (Terrance Green), the gripping Marquise’s Interlude,” which highlights an intriguing supporting character, portrayed by Terayle Hill, and the lead single Genesis,” premiered by Billboardand written and performed by Ne-Yo.  With two additional songs from Ne-Yo, and composition and production from Timbaland and producer Matthew Head, the soundtrack is available everywhere via YouTube/Lionsgate Music.

Based on the successful Step Up film franchise from Lionsgate, which has grossed $650 million at the global box office, Step Up: High Water follows several students at a cutthroat performing arts school in Atlanta. Series regulars Ne-YoNaya Rivera, and Faizon Love return for a second season, joining newcomers Ashley GreeneRobin Givens and Jeremy Copeland. In the second season, multi-platinum recording artist and entrepreneur Rick Ross guest stars as himself, as does Todrick Hall and choreographer JaQuel Knight.
