With candy-coated production courtesy of his brother T3, among others, Squidtastic is a collection of distinct sonic worlds, bouncing from the liquid metal churn of “Behind Da Scenes,” to Latin guitars on “Army,” to laid-back Neosoul on “Sunny Days.” Deftly inhabiting the varied instrumentals with an understated and intoxicating presence, SahBabii levels up his songwriting ability on the new mixtape, nearing the rarified territory of mentors like 21 Savage and Young Thug. Further refining the rapper’s aqueous trap aesthetic, Squidtastic arrives via SahBabii’s own Casting Bait Music Group.

Blending influences from all over the rap spectrum into a signature concoction, SahBabii is one of the most respected young emcees in the ATL scene. After releasing relatively unheralded mixtapes in 2013 and 2015, the trap game finally caught up to SahBabii in 2017, when he released “Pull Up Wit Ah Stick,” featuring fellow ATL upstart Loso Loaded. The song caught fire with hip-hop’s cognoscenti, including Drake, who posted about the song on social media, and T-Pain, Fetty Wap, and Wiz Khalifa, who recorded remixes. With over 48 million views on YouTube and 29 million plays on Spotify, “Pull Up Wit Ah Stick” was one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year. Since “Pull Up Wit Ah Stick,” SahBabii has grown into one of ATL’s stalwarts, releasing the acclaimed mixtape S.A.N.D.A.S. in summer 2017, scoring a sync on season 2 of FX’s Atlanta with “Marsupial Superstars,” and scoring a follow-up hit with “Outstanding,” featuring 21 Savage, which has over 7 million plays on Spotify and landed on the service’s Rap Caviar playlist.

SahBabii Background:

Perseverance and a distinctive way with light melodies pushed SahBabii out of the Atlanta rap underground. Born Saaheem Valdery, SahBabii was raised in Chicago until the age of 13, when his family moved south. Inspired by the activity in his new environment — especially the output of Young Thug — SahBabii made tentative steps with a couple mixtapes, Pimpin Ain’t Easy and Glocks & Thots, released during his early teen years. Tepid reception left SahBabii dispirited, but after an extended break from recording, the rapper returned at the tail-end of 2016 with S.A.N.D.A.S., his third mixtape, with production from his brother T3. The tape’s “Pull Up with Ah Stick,” featuring Loso Loaded, exemplified SahBabii‘s refined synthesis of gunplay threats and candy-coated hooks. The track was licensed to major-label Warner Bros. and released commercially the following April. In 2018, he issued the singles “Outstanding” with 21 Savage and “Watery.” His highly anticipated follow up mixtape, Squidtastic, is in its final stages and will be released at the end of Summer 2018.
