The St. Petersburg Native Takes a Trip to the West Coast with E-40 in “Calabasas,” the Latest Video Single from the Project

Critical Praise:

If you’re not familiar with the sounds of Rod Wave, he’s certainly one of the most talented acts to come out of Florida in some time.” – The Modern Life Mag

“One of Florida’s finest musicians”ELEVATOR

“The 19-year-old can rap at a brisk pace like an ATL rapper, hit a falsetto like a R&B singer, and often digs deep to unleash a gravelly voice that sounds like he’s the lead in a country rock band…he already possesses one of the best voices in the South.”Pitchfork

The Announcement + Video:

One of the finest singers in rap music, Rod Wave is a master at conveying powerful and raw emotion. Pushing his career forward while taking an honest account of his past life in St. Petersburg, Florida, Rod Wave announces P.T.S.D., his upcoming mixtape. The mindset of growing up in poverty can cause trauma–even if those who defy the odds and lift themselves out can be paralyzed with anxiety, dreading a moment when all their gains to be wiped out by greedy acquaintances, violence, or dwindling success. On P.T.S.D., Rod acknowledges his accomplishments with pride, but never forgets his humble origins or stops fighting to buoy his friends, family, and neighborhood with his success. The upcoming tape continues the soulful, introspective, and hard-hitting trajectory of Rod’s recent singles, including his mission statement “Popular Loner” (2.5 million YouTube views), the guitar-speckled recounting of his rise Tru Story,” and the brilliantly-sung Hard Times” (1.1 million streams on its official YouTube audio), all of which appear on the upcoming project. Featuring appearances from E-40 and G HerboP.T.S.D. arrives on June 14th via Alamo Records/Interscope.

To accompany the announcement of the upcoming mixtape, Rod shares the West Coast-set clip for “Calabasas.” With a gently lilting instrumental, mixing strummed acoustic guitars with booming 808s and crisp snares, the song finds Rod contrasting his tumultuous past with his luxurious present–now he can take a spontaneous trip to SoCal just to clear his head. The new single features an appearance from E-40, who attunes to Rod’s sentimental wavelength, using a double-time flow to remind rap fans that before his three decades in the rap game, he grew up with nothing: “Growing in the ghetto was nothing short of unforgettable/Horrific scenes, helicopters, people get flew to the hospital.” In the video, Rod and E-40 mob in the sunshine, proving once and for all that its ever so slightly easier to deal with your problems if you live where there’s perfect weather.

Carrying the weight of his community on his shoulders, Rod Wave is quickly becoming a cult figure. Last week, Rod showed his sensitive side in the loose single “Heart On Ice.”  Rod’s upcoming P.T.S.D. is the anticipated follow-up to Hunger Games 3, his soulful late-2018 mixtape, which boasts street hits like the Moneybagg Yo-featuring “Feel The Same Way” and the lyrical “Heart 4 Sale.” Rod recently performed for a very receptive home state crowd at Rolling Loud Festival, performing his new music and previewing future hits.
