The Song:
Today, Brooklyn-born, Philly-based rapper Curly Castro is releasing "Coal," the first official single from his forthcoming album FIDEL, which will be released for free on February 19th via Man Bites Dog Records. The track, which features fellow Philly rapper Has-Lo, along with production from Georgia Anne Muldrow, was premiered this morning by DJBooth.
"Coal," according to Curly, offers the artist's unique and real experience and perspective on growing up in a segregated community, and how that experience juxtaposed against his attending mostly white schools. "I grew up in a segregated community, literally 'on the other side of the tracks,'" says Curly, noting that the track is intended to shed light on the social grey area that often impacts issues like race. "I wanted to illustrate that the color lines that divide us racially aren't always so bold; they blur."
For such a heavy topic, the artists that Curly chose to collaborate with on the song carried the utmost importance, and, for Curly, both Has-Lo and Georgia Anne Muldrow brought something essential to the track. Georgia's intricate production, in particular, was essential for allowing Curly to deliver the song's strong social consciousness. "The beat was created by the divinity we call Georgia Anne Muldrow," says Curly, "Her beat making skills are par none, and I'm honored to be able to craft over one of her masterpieces."
