MP3: Curly Castro - "My Beloved" Ft. Open Mike Eagle
02.01.2013
New Track Precursor to Forthcoming Album, FIDEL
The Song:
Today, to celebrate the beginning of a new partnership with burgeoning label Man Bites Dog Records, Philadelphia rapper Curly Castro is releasing his new song "My Beloved." This spring, Curly Castro will release his free album, FIDEL, through Man Bites Dog, and though "My Beloved" won't appear on that album, the song, which finds Castro collaborating with rapper Open Mike Eagle and producer Ricky Radio, serves not only as a warm-up for that official project, but also as a fine example of the music that fans can look to expect on the album.
"My Beloved," says Castro, serves in homage to weed and Curly Castro’s love for it. But as a true connoisseur, it was important to Curly to make a song that went beyond the surface level ode to marijuana so prevalent in rap music. "I take the practice of smoking to a higher spiritual level," says Curly, "and so I wanted the song to be atypical. This one isn't your average 'puff-puff-pass' variety."
Joining Curly Castro on the song, which was premiered today by PassionWeiss, is rapper Open Mike Eagle and producer Ricky Radio, the famed producer for The Roots who also works under the name Rick Friedrich, and it was Radio's production that set the tone for the record. "Ricky Radio provided me this slow-burner, and I wanted to do it justice," recalls Curly of the instrumental, adding that the addition of Open Mike Eagle to the track was an easy one. "He's also an aficionado of the high-grade ganja, and a master of metaphor to further burn Babylon down with me."
