The Video:

Surrounding the release of his Jesus Malverde album, Pittsburg, California, rapper A-Wax has put out a string of finely crafted videos, most recently today's "Pie-Rx Boy." A nod to A-Wax's own label Pie-Rx Recordz and the team who makes it happen, in-house collaborators Brian Reyes and Teddy Gyi of Sigmond IV Multimedia once again oversee the treatment, which features A-Wax as an employee of the fictional late night diner "Rex's Diner."

A-Wax, no stranger to the way in which his gun-brandishing image can appear as cliché, knowingly says, "they think I am a little bit predictable with my themes and messages." So putting A-Wax as kitchen staff is a way to switch it up and challenge that perception. "If you hear, 'Pie-Rx Boy, keep it cooking' on the hook," explains A-Wax, "you might assume I'll be cooking dope or standing on the block. I wanted to throw them off with this one, and we had fun making it, not taking ourselves too seriously." Things ramp up a bit, though, as the track's catchy hook comes in, along with some machine gun-toting robbers, and the video unwinds in a tense play-by-play.

The Background:

A lot of rappers make music about the penitentiary. Few can say that they learned their craft while incarcerated. Having emerged after a lengthy stretch in the prison system during his teenage years, A-Wax turned to rap and came up in the game old-fashioned way, selling CDs hand-to-hand and through Mom & Pop stores across the region. The hard work has paid off -- A-Wax has moved over 200,000 units, independently, no small feat, and the accomplishment eventually led to a deal with Akon's Konvict Muzik label. A-Wax and Akon ultimately went their seperate ways, due to creative differences, and now A-Wax is back on the independent grind. In 2012, A-Wax released Everybody Loves Me: Chapter 1., with features from French Montana, Styles P., Mistah FAB, and more. He followed that with the announcement of his new label, Pie-Rx Recordz. and the release of his Pie-Rx Muzik mixtape. Now, A-Wax is prepping the release of his latest album, Jesus Malverde, which includes features from Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Cashis, and YG Hootie, and was just released Feburary 26, 2013.
