The Montreal Rapper Hosts a Postmodern Talk Show in the Billboard-Premiered Single for the Electro Rap Banger

Critical Praise:

“Montreal MC Lou Phelps’s “What Time Is It?!” is an irresistible jam — the kind of song that demands a two-step.” – The FADER

“The Canadian rapper is representing where he’s from hard on the new project, which was exclusively produced by his Polaris prize-winning older brother Kaytranada.”XXL

“A handful of singles then followed under his Lou Phelps moniker before last year’s standout debut, 001: Experiments, which fused the electronic experimentation of the artist glimpsed on Cause I Wanna with deeper influence from Madvillain, Slum Village, Jay Z, and Erik B & Rakim.” XLR8R

The Video:

Skating over electro-rap instrumentals with a fluid flow, Montreal’s Lou Phelps embodies his city’s diverse creativity. Sharing a psychedelic, humorous, and unsettling clip for a candy-colored disco-funk single, Lou Phelps gets metaphysical with Come Inside.” In the video, Phelps falls asleep while watching TV, dreaming that he hosts a late night talk show. Initially a pleasantly odd experience, the vibe grows sinister when the characters on TV start interacting with Lou, staring daggers, dancing, and eventually growing violent. Premiered by Billboard, the KAYTRANADA-produced “Come Inside” is a unique and immersive visual experience. With audio premiered in February by Complexthe song features a standout verse from fellow Canadian Jazz Cartier, who has a blast stringing together flashy punchlines over the club-ready sonics.

A longtime fixture of the Montreal arts scene, Lou Phelps is one of Canada’s foremost purveyors of club-rap bangers. Lou started making music in 2011 with his older brother Kevin, aka the Polaris Prize-winning producer KAYTRANADA, forming a future-rap group called The Celestics. Using the moniker Louie P, Lou developed a reputation for creating tasteful and danceable electro rap, releasing Supreme Laziness in 2014 and curating Cause I Wannaan 80-minute DJ mix that featured tracks from innovative electronic artists like DJ RashadRP Boo, and Kyle Hall, showcasing his excellent taste and long list of influences. In 2017, Lou released 001: Experimentshis debut project which racked up over 1 million plays on SoundCloud, featured appearances from Bishop Nehru, Innanet James, KALLITECHNIS, and CJ Flemings, and earned a nomination from Canada’s Juno Awards for Rap Recording of the Year. Look out for more music from Lou in 2018, as the young rapper continues to evolve as an artist.
