Single: FXXXXY – “Staying Single”

The Interscope Signee Walks Us Through His Thought Process In a Lush Dirty-Glove Bastard-Premiered Rap&B Jam

Critical Praise for FXXXXY:

Flawed Up Shawty EP shows FXXXXY’s range of talents with meticulous production, memorable hooks, and agile flows. It also walks the line between a murky undergound vibe and more pop-leaning accessibility. FXXXXY is operating in his own lane and has yet to get a public superstar co-sign or a big-name collaboration, but Flawed Up Shawty is the first look at a talented new artist coming into his own, and if he keeps progressing at this rate, big things should follow.” – Pigeons & Planes

The Song:

Dallas artist FXXXXY has a versatile approach behind the mic and behind the boards, able to craft hard-nosed rap and sweetly sung R&B in equal measure. Leaning into melody atop a luscious self-produced backing track, FXXXXY shares Staying Single.” Though it resembles an R&B slow jam, “Staying Single” turns the concept on its head, as FXXXXY isn’t describing romantic love, but declaring his intentions to give it up entirely. Reverberating with pitched-down vocal samples and screeching synths, the single finds the Interscope signee deciding to get his mind right by taking time for himself. Premiered by Dirty-Glove Bastard, “Staying Single” represents the conclusion of FXXXXY’s thought process in “Self Care,” his piano-laden previous single, as he abandons emotional attachment and all the pain that comes with it.

Whether he raps or sings, FXXXXY captivates with his raspy vocals and ear for hooks. Signed to Rule #1/Interscope, FXXXXY produces most of his music himself, with a style that ranges from snapping, synth-driven trap to soul-sampling heat. After sharing the critically acclaimed project Flawed Up Shawty in 2017, FXXXXY earned a co-sign from Earl Sweatshirt for his confessional lyricism and biting wit. “Staying Single” follows in the wake of Need U,” an immersive trap ballad with a guest verse from Gunna, which has over 2.2 million streams on Spotify alone, and the Lil Durk-featuring “Follow Me,” released in 2018.

Born and raised in Dallas, FXXXXY was determined to launch his music career by any means necessary. Never one to give up easily, FXXXXY did whatever he could to make music, learning how to play the violin and the piano, forgoing sleep to sneakily make music in his mom’s ’89 Toyota Camry between the hours of 4-5am and forgoing using his breakfast and lunch money to buy food so he could save up for recording equipment, landing in the hospital for malnutrition. FXXXXY’s upbringing turned him into a self-sufficient musical force, able to channel each aspect of his life into a full-fledged artistic statement. For FXXXXY, music is a life-changing and life-saving force.

Stay tuned for much more from FXXXXY in the months to come.
