Album: E-40 – The Gift of Gab

The Hip-Hop Legend Releases A Streamlined and Star-Studded New Album, the First of Three Solo Albums to Come Out in 2018; Shares Super-Hyphy “Wicked” Video ft. Rich Rocka

Critical Praise:

“E-40 is a national treasure” – Stereogum

“Whoever you are, and whatever your low-grade malaise, E-40 is here to banish it. The Bay Area rap forefather is a human exclamation point, a superhero whose power is remaining helplessly in love with his work. E-40 works harder and more joyfully at making great rap music than you or I have ever worked on anything”Pitchfork

“The Bay Area’s ambassador E-40 is one of those rare veterans in hip-hop that gets better with time.”Complex

The Album:

Coining sticky catchphrases for years, since well before the current crop of rappers left diapers, Vallejo’s E-40 is rap’s Lord of Lexicon, a verifiable sultan of slang. Returning to the fold with his 28th studio album, the prolific hip-hop legend shares The Gift of Gab, his new LP, and the first of three 2018 LPs in the The Definition Series. With a massive vocabulary and a knack for finding hidden meanings, E-40 earned a reputation as one of the best lyricists in hip-hop, twisting phrases that embed themselves in listener’s heads and in the culture at large: Captain Save-a-Hoe, Broccoli (weed), Fetti (money), and more. On the new album, 40 flexes his lexicon over high-definition Bay Area beats, wielding his rubbery and elastic flow to expand his sonic palette and mutate the mainstream to fit his singular vision. Featuring appearances from Vince Staples, Ty Dolla $ign, G Perico, Kent Jones, Yhung T.O., Problem, FMB DZ, Sada Baby, Konshens and more, The Gift of Gab releases via Sick Wid It Records.

An unstoppable force in the rap game, E-40 churns out charting albums with remarkable efficiency. Earlier this year, the rapper teamed up with B-Legit, his cousin and with 40, a co-founder of seminal rap group The Click, for Connected & Respected, a full-length collaborative album. Packed with classic Bay Area slappers like the P-Lo-featuring dancefloor jam “BOY,” Connected & Respected is a master-class in rhyming and a treatise to the importance of keeping it in the family. In addition to his prolific musical output and his frequent courtside appearances at Golden State Warriors games, E-40 is an accomplished businessman in the adult beverage industry, hitting it big with his Earl Stevens Selections line of wine, his best-selling mixed cocktail drink Sluricane, and most recently, E. Cuarenta, his new brand of premium tequila. E-40 continues to add to his legacy with The Gift of Gab, with two more albums slated to release before the end of this year.

To accompany the release of the album, E-40 shares “Wicked,” a minimalist party jam off the new album. With an appearance from Rich Rocka on the hook, “Wicked” finds 40 employing an entrancing stop-start flow, kicking off the song on the perfect note: “Well damn, another muthafuckin’ slappy/Make ya mammy wanna slap ya pappy/Make ya motorcycle pop a wheelie/Figure 8, make ya ’50 do a 360.” In the video, which features a cameo appearance from Nef The Pharaoh, OMB Peezy, JT The 4th, B-Legit, Choose Up Cheese, Cousin Fik, and Laroo, 40 goes dumb in a warehouse, echoing his classic video for “Tell Me When To Go,” while muscle cars do figure 8s and donuts under the Oakland sun.

On August 29th, E-40 embarks on The Gift of Gab Tour. Spanning 21 dates across the west coast, The Gift of Gab Tour features special guests Nef The Pharaoh and OMB Peezy and will offer fans the opportunity to meet 40 at a special Meet & Eat with 40 and Trap Kitchen. Buy tickets here.

The Background:

One of the most celebrated rappers of all time, E-40 has attained legendary status in hip-hop. Since making his debut with The Click almost 30 years ago and becoming one of the first West Coast rap artists to sign to a major label, his name has become synonymous with the independent music movement. E-40 has released 24 solo albums, become a platinum recording artist and collaborated with artists including Tupac, UGK, and Snoop Dogg. At age 48, E-40 is an anomaly in hip-hop, maintaining his relevance over a career that spans three decades. In the past few years alone, he’s been featured on several Billboard charts (“Choices,” Big Sean’s “IDFWU”, Ty Dolla $ign’s “Saved”), he’s earned an RIAA-certified Gold plaque (“Choices”) and starred and had his 2006 smash hit “Tell Me When to Go” featured in a Beats By Dre commercial. Says E-40, “What’s happening at this point in my career defies logic. Name another 48-year-old rapper with one Gold record, let alone three in the same year. My fans stretch much further than the Bay Area, further than just the West Coast. I brought so much shit to hip-hop. I’ve been relevant in each generation and each decade and I’ve done it as an independent artist.”

E-40’s success extends beyond the music industry, most notably through his entrepreneurship in the adult beverages industry. His wine business, Earl Stevens Selections, distributes high-quality wine to stores across the country, including BevMo, Safeway, and local liquor stores. He has made inroads into the pre-mixed cocktail business with Sluricane, a signature bottled-mix named after his 1995 hit “Hurricane,” with The Click, which was the top-selling beverage at BevMo when it was first released. Most recently, E-40 announced E. Cuarenta, his new signature line of premium tequilas. Look out for The Gift of Gab, his 28th studio album, hitting stores on August 24th.
