The Mixtape:

BLKHRTS, a Denver-based rap group comprised of members YonnasKing F.O.E, and Karma The Voice, have been creating buzz for some time now with their attention grabbing blend of metal, goth, hardcore and hip-hop, and are now set to unleash their latest effort, the Death, Romance and The Color BLK mixtape, which is due out July 30 via Lecord Rabel, an imprint of Dave Sitek’s Federal Prism label.

The group’s goth-rap style plays like M.O.P. meet Morrissey, filtered through heavy, threatening percussion thrown into a mosh pit. With each member’s distinct vocal delivery that ranges from sparse, poetic flows to agitated, aggressive and descriptive storytelling has elevated them beyond simple classifications for their genre. Eclectic sampling, from Joy Division, Matthew Dear and Eraserhead to name a few, cross-genre musical influences and poignant, substantive content have gained BLKHRTS national attention, with nods from Pitchfork and the LA Times as well as performances at a SXSW showcase and at Low End Theory in Los Angeles.

The new 11-track mixtape will feature production by group member Yonnas as well as collaborations with Big Black Delta and Steven McDonald of hardcore punk band OFF!. Jeff Weiss’ Passion of the Weiss premiered the first leak from the album, “The Space Between (I’ve Got It All In Here)” in which he describes the pitched up vocal samples as slamming into twisted metal and their three voices bleeding into “one hoarse bark, filled with chants and drums too dark to glitter.”

BLKHRTS Background:

BLKHRTS are three MCs that hail from Denver, Colorado; King F.O.E, Karma The Voice, and Yonnas. Citing musical influences that range from Morrissey and Joy Division to M.O.P. and E-40, BLKHRTS have created a sound Yonnas, the group’s producer, describes as “a grand and emotive romanticism and fatalism..layer[ed] over hard beats.” Walking the line between rock and rap, the group’s production maintains an edgy and hard hitting energy while their lyrical delivery oscillates between laid back flows to lightning fast descriptive storytelling. Their lyrical content tends toward exploring the darker aspects of themes like sex, drugs, money and death, reflecting their own life struggles and those of their community. Having already garnered critical acclaim with their previous work—Pitchfork called their 2011 debut BLK S BTFL “one of the year’s best overlooked mixtapes,” and the LA Times wrote, “BLKHRTS’ words and beats hit like shrapnel…it is rap as hard-core punk that never forgets it’s hip-hop”—the group has continued to work feverishly, individually and collectively. Yonnas released SEXTAPE, while F.O.E. put out his own solo project entitled J.U.N.K.I.E., and full length album executive-produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek will drop later this year on Lecord Rabel, an imprint of Dave Sitek‘s Federal Prism.
