Critical Praise:

“He is definitely one of the most consistent artists out right now.” – Earmilk

“[‘No Job’ is a] capering, island-influenced jam by East Oakland’s ymtk (which stands for “Young Murph the Kid”) sounds like PARTYNEXTDOOR, but if he was on uppers. It’s a tropical, fun dance track that is sure to get you moving, and it’s like nothing else we’ve heard come out of the Bay Area this year. Now that’s saying something.”  SF Weekly

Emoji Goats is the type of breezy Bay R&B/rap fusion we need in a world that has regurgitated the same Drake-lite SoundCloud bedroom crooning for far too long.” Complex

The Video:

Approaching futuristic R&B from a Hip-Hop state of mind, nobody makes music quite like Oakland’s ymtk. Showing the full potential of his pipes over a bass-heavy and ethereal instrumental courtesy of producer Ekzakt, ymtk is at his most romantic on Undivided,” his latest video. Directed by Rexx Life Vari, the clip finds ymtk spending quality time with the object of his affection, recording his relationship on an old-fashioned camcorder at the crib and in their more private moments. Premiered by ThisIsRnB, “Undivided” is a highlight from 9Song.Wav, a funky and ethereal exploration of the different shades of love. Premiered last month by LA Leakers9Song.Wav is a funky and ethereal exploration of the different shades of love. Featuring standout tracks like the VIBE-premiered, guitar-inflected beach anthem Confetti and the P-Lo-featuring club banger “In This Moment,” 9Song.Wav is a lyrically sharp and sonically colorful burst of sunshine to warm up the winter months.

One of the more quietly prolific and influential artists in the modern Bay Area music scene, ymtk (short for “Young Murph The Kidd”) has collaborated with everybody from Nef The Pharaoh to Iamsu! to Too $hort. Born and raised in Oakland, ymtk started making music in the heyday of the hyphy music. Though he loved the music of the movement, the music that he created did not quite fit with the regional style, so he relocated to Los Angeles to make the smooth hybrid of rap and R&B that he is known for today. Last year, ymtk released the eccentric All The Right Places, which featured “No Job,” one of SF Weekly’s Best Bay Area Songs of 2016,  and boasted appearances from Marc E. Bassy, Choice, Rexx Life Raj, Iamsu!, and Too $hort, and garnered a major sync when his song “Hella Super High” appeared in the Lionsgate film Kicks. Most recently, ymtk collaborated with Rexx Life Raj for the Emoji Goats EP, a short and winsomely eccentric EP with appearances from P-Lo and Caleborate, which Complex named an Album That Should Be On Your Radar.
