The Video:
Singles like “Everyday We Lit“ and “Key To The Streets” helped propel him to stardom, but life hasn’t always been easy for YFN Lucci. Revisiting his old neighborhood and smoking stogies on the bando porch, the Think It’s A Game rapper re-lives his youth in the video for “Been Broke Before.” A moving, melodic trap anthem from his recent Long Live Nut EP, the June James-produced “Been Broke Before” is a motivational, yet realistic track: Lucci knows that nothing in life is permanent, and that he can lose everything if he doesn’t continue to work as hard as he did before he was successful. Directed by Marc Diamond, the video finds Lucci exploring his hometown of Summerville, GA, kicking it with his day ones, and visiting the local cemetery with Lil Fat, the son of Lucci’s late mentor Nut, his EP’s namesake. Premiered by Mass Appeal, “Been Broke Before” is another example of Lucci’s mastery of tone and a revealing glimpse into the rapper’s past.
Named in honor of his late mentor and boasting guest appearances from Rick Ross, PNB Rock, Lil Durk, Dreezy, and Boosie Badazz, Long Live Nut racked up 28.6 million plays on Spotify since its release in April. The success of Long Live Nut comes on the heels of the EP’s first single “Everyday We Lit,” the PNB Rock-featuring single which reached the top 20 on the urban radio charts and recently peaked at #75 on the Hot 100 on the heels of its recent video and the Wiz Khalifa and Lil Yachty-featuring remix. YFN Lucci earned his first major hit in 2016 with the June James-produced hit “Key to the Streets,” a critical and commercial success. Featuring a high-profile assist from Quavo on the hook and first verse, “Key To The Streets” built momentum throughout the year, accumulating over 48 million YouTube views, peaking at #70 at the Billboard charts, and reaching #1 on Mediabase‘s urban airplay chart.
