The Song:

Following the 8th annual Trae Day, an appointed holiday in his hometown of Houston, Trae Tha Truth releases his 7th solo album, Tha Truth. With features from Nipsey Hussle, Lil Bibby, Snootie Wild, Que, Jeremih, Ty Dolla $ign, T.I., J. Cole, Ink, Rich Homie Quan, and DeJ Loaf, the album debuted via Complex and showcases some of Trae’s most prolific collaborations as well as his growth as an artist. Additional features include Rick Ross, who appeared on Trae’s first single from the project, “I Don’t Give A Fuck,” Future and Boosie, who collaborated with Trae on the album’s second offering, “Tricken Every Car I Get,” and Problem and Lil Boss, who assisted with the third single, “Yeah Hoe,” which released last week via Billboard.

“With Trae appearing on multiple Grand Hustle projects since the signing, everything about Tha Truth feels like it’s occurring at the proper time,” wrote the Houston Press, who wrote a spread on Trae about his recently released album and Trae Day earlier this week. In an interview with AllHipHop, the Houston legend spoke on shifting the project into an album from its original mixtape status and how J. Cole, who appears on Tha Truth‘s “Children of Men,” influenced his decision. “[J. Cole] was like ‘there’s no point of doing a mixtape bro. You need to take your lane. You got a lane out there that you can control and make your name within hip-hop,” Trae explained. “People are going to appreciate the music way much more knowing that it’s real album as opposed to a mixtape.” The Houston rapper further expanded in an interview with VIBE. “I think the most important of this album is everybody knows I’m capable of doing good music and I can spit but I think the album’s going to take a lot of people by storm.”

Tha Truth is preceded by Trae Tha Truth’s Trae Day. An appointed holiday in his city of Houston once documented by The FADER TV, Trae Day is an event that gives school supplies, immunization shots, and HIV tests to disadvantaged youth. “No matter how big people may think I am, I’m always in the streets giving that helping hand,” Trae explained in a 2010 interview with MTV. “What I do on my day is I don’t make it about me, even though it’s called ‘Trae Day’, I make it a day for the kids and the families that need help.” Trae does a lot of the shopping for the event himself, which he documents via Instagram. “I shut down the whole Walmart,” he explained to the Houston Press. “Every cashier, everybody stopped to take pictures and help out with the school supplies.” Performers at this year’s event included Ty Dolla $ign, Paul Wall, J-Dawg, Lil Herb, K Camp, Nipsey Hussle, and more.

In addition to his preparation for Trae Day, Trae has been promoting Tha Truth with listening parties in L.A., NYC, Houston, and Atlanta, among other stops. Preceded by interviews with The Breakfast Club, VIBE, Houston Press, ThisIs50, and AllHipHop, and more, Trae is ready for his official commercial release for Tha Truth, which is available now via iTunes.

There are three ways to write about Trae Tha Truth. One is to talk about his music, and that’s important because he is a rapper and making music is what he does. The other is to talk about him as a human, and that’s important, because he has done some truly monumental and impressive things. The third is to talk about the intersection of him as a rapper and him as a humanitarian, because that’s where Trae really belongs. His music is often inspired by the experiences of the disenfranchised, which is rooted in the broken roads of the ghetto. It’s driven by loss, by love, by loyalty, and by when one or two or all of those things are taken away or tested of those he cares about.

Trae Tha Truth is very modest, he never talks about his guest features he’d done or any of his new tapes (Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, T.I., Nas, etc.) or how he’d landed another MTV JAM Video of the Week or how he’d signed to T.I.’s label or any of the things people were watching him accomplish from afar. What you need to about Trae is he is a rapper, who has only ever viewed rap as another way for him to help people.
