Lovers are in for a treat this Valentine’s Day – the fierce, charismatic Brooklyn emcee Siya switches gears with the mellow, vibey Commitment EP, releasing on February 14th. Produced entirely by The Olympicks (Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, A$AP Rocky) and featuring a guest appearance from R&B veteran Tank, Commitment fuses the expansive, blissed out synths of cloud rap and the gauzy emotional confessionalism of Toronto-style rap-n-b into a unique blend, driven by Siya’s force of personality. Filled with sensuous hooks and lyrics about the ups and downs of falling in love, Siya offers a personal effort that is poised to connect with those going through the same motions. On lead single “Front Door,” Siya dives into the complexities of commitment, surfacing with raw emotion over a flickering, snapping beat.
In a recent interview with HotNewHipHop, Siya spoke on her aspirations and what kind of artist she strives to be: “I’m speaking to the youth and to my culture, how I was raised. Young black kids and young Latinos don’t really have many role models and I try to be that for them. For people who look like me, think like me, act like me, I want to give them something to look up to. I want them to understand that the only person who can stop you is you. I’ve been told that I’m a role model both by kids and by adults, by people who know my story and know where I’ve come from and what I’ve done so far. I don’t feel any pressure to live up to any expectations. I just have to wake up everyday and continue to be myself the best way I can be. I have to be myself first before I can be anything else for anyone else.”
With her sights set on a big 2017, Commitment is this year’s first offering from the Bedford-Stuvesant bred artist. In 2016, Siya released the hard-hitting SIYAvsSIYA, her debut album. Featuring appearances from Sage The Gemini, Lyric Wright, Jake & Papa, Kreesha Turner, and Ashley Rose, the album posits a battle between the two conflicting sides of Siya’s personality. On the first half of the album Siya leans on her brutal, tough “Bed-Stuy Bully” persona, attacking classic-style New York boom-bap beats with endless bars. The album’s second half displays her softer, more sensitive self, as she alternates between singing and rapping over textured, relaxed electronic instrumentals. Signed to Tank’s R&B Money label, Siya is the breakout star of Sisterhood of Hip Hop, a reality series on Oxygen starring five female rappers who navigate their way through the male-dominated music industry.

Michele Sherman (born March 23, 1987), better known by her stage name Siya, is an American rapper signed to R&B singer and songwriter Tank. She currently stars in the Oxygen reality TV series Sisterhood of Hip Hop. She is famed for being an openly gay female rapper. She is an upcoming actress. Siya released a mixtape entitled Better Late Than Never in February 2015. She released her single the “Real MVP” and One Hunnid in September 2014. She has released other singles such as “D.Y.K.E.,” “Heaven,” “I Put Niggas On” and “I’m Gone.” Siya has collaborated with artists such as Chris Brown, Tank, and Sage the Gemini. Siya has performed alongside artists such as Wyclef Jean at the world famous B.B. Kings as well as opened up for Fat Joe and Fabolous during a concert at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York. Currently, she’s working on her album SiyavsSiya, which will be out soon. It’s progress is also documented on Sisterhood of Hip Hop.
