The Video:
Chicago rapper ProbCause teamed up with a group of DePaul University students for his nostalgic “Pale Moonlight” video that channels a setting inspired by legendary jazz club The Green Mill circa the 1920’s. “Chicago has a very dark and unique history that I think can be felt in the song,” ProbCause told Yahoo! Music in their premiere of the Mac Kozi and Danny Farber-directed visual. The seemingly innocent jazz club scene quickly turns into a violent backroom scene inspired by the history of organized crime in Chicago, a city that prominent mob figure Al Capone famously called home. A single from 2014’s WAVES EP, the lanky emcee enlisted The Social Experiment‘s Donnie Trumpet to give the song the “Old Chicago” feel.
This year ProbCause released Drifters, a versatile album with subject matter that ranges from enchanting explorations of romantic companionship on “Portrait” to a dream state of skepticism on “Wake Up,” and later the slacker-friendly serenading of “The Woods.” Debuted by Red Bull Music, Drifters reveals the highly collaborative and vibrant musical community within the city of Chicago. “I work with a lot of really talented musicians in Chicago so it was a very organic thing to involve them in the production process,” ProbCause explained. “[This album] is much more musical than anything I’ve made in the past.”
The album followed an 18-city tour with Lil Dicky that spanned the East Coast and South in June, and came prior to a performance at the North Coast Festival and ProbCause’s own headlining Drifters Tour. The Chicago rapper announced the project via Consequence of Sound in July with “I Feel U,” the first single that’s since eclipsed 180K plays on SoundCloud. Released via Gramatik’s Lowtemp Music, the final teaser came when Complex shared the juke/footwork-inspired “M.I.A.” With influences from a diverse range of genres including punk, jazz, hip-hop, and more, ProbCause is one of Chicago’s most versatile emcees bending genres to create his own sound.
