The Song:
Today marks the release of Vast Aire's latest EP, A Space Iliad, a collection of remixes and b-sides from his previous OX 2010: A Space Odyssey, via Man Bites Dog Records. To celebrate the EP release, Vast Aire, one half of the acclaimed rap duo Cannibal Ox and founding member of the Atoms Family and The Weathermen, is following up on last week's "Royal Purple Bag" video with the second single from A Space Iliad, "Monster," which features Sadat X and C-Rayz Walz.
While "Royal Purple Bag" carried a more ambient tone, "Monster" offers listeners a different, more aggressive side of Vast Aire. Featuring gritty guitar and a guttural low-pitched voice for the chorus, the song is full of witty jabs at various New York staples like lawyers fresh out of law school, the vengeful D.A., and, of course, the police. Calling out the villains of this town, each verse offers different political challenges in classic style. Though ultimately a reflective track about human nature, it's loaded with edge and lively sarcasm.
Of the track's sound, producer Kount Fif says, "I wanted to make a completely different sounding joint, I wanted to make something that was darker…. the drug induced state in which I had to propel myself in order to touch the finger tips of the music gods." For his part, Vast Aire speaks highly of the collaboration. "I'm a huge Brand Nubian fan; me and Sadat X are close and always make dope music," he says. "It's great to work with him. Respect to Sadat X and C-Rayz."
