"Mesh the grunge fried sound of Neil Young and Crazy Horse with Nick Cave at his most feral and tempestuous, and you have an indication of the sonic territory this Vancouver-based group alights on. Prepare for scorch marks on the soul at every listen of this, their fourth album." - UK's Daily Mirror

"
Group choruses/hollerbacks to a slow 'n' grooved-up swing, set for your local indie blues joint." - Stereogum

"
What Bazan (Pedro The Lion) would sound like if catchiness was a priority." - The Glorious Hum

The MP3:

In advance of the May 7th release of their new LP Damaged Goods, The Mohawk Lodge keep us rocking with new single "Hard Love." Where The Hold Steady and Arcade Fire have long employed a classic Springsteen-esque sound, The Mohawk Lodge go one step further on "Hard Love," fully channeling the raw energy of the Boss. The sound is familiar and harkens back to a golden era of anthemic rock. Frontman and creator Ryder Havdale's rich baritone builds steadily through the last refrain of "Hard Love" until a final yell let's us know we're home.

Reflecting on the genesis of the song Ryder tells us, "It happened so quickly that it wasn't one of those tunes where there was an initial purpose. The line 'I don't want to dance around your good times, I just want those good times to be dancing 'round me' fell out of my mouth and we went from there..." Peering deeper into the lyrics reveals some of Ryder's personal inspiration. "In retrospect, it's partly about a relationship I was in that was on-again, off-again. I wasn't fully committed to it, and that girl made me suffer for it. Hard love!"

Damaged Goods is the 4th album from The Mohawk Lodge and at 30 minutes, it's their rawest, shortest, and most urgent recording to date. Ryder has taken both himself and his ever-changing companions in The Mohawk Lodge on wild and sometimes unexpected musical rides and Damaged Goods is no exception.

The Mohawk Lodge will be touring through the US beginning in early May. Tour dates below.

The Background:

The seeds for Damaged Goods sprouted as The Mohawk Lodge traipsed about Europe while on tour for their third album, Crimes (2010). After run-ins with insane Belgian truckers and enduring bitterly cold temperatures in December, the band coalesced into a formidable live act with an undeniable energy and chemistry. Upon returning to Canada, Ryder Havdale set out to capture the live band's spirit and drive. After regaining his own sanity in a remote cabin built by his great-grandfather, recording was done live off the floor in a sweltering Toronto heat wave. In nothing but boxer shorts, and standing in pools of their own sweat, the Euro-touring band that helped inspire and create the tunes, exorcised the album. Havdale feels they nailed it. "It's the first record I've done where I feel like we succeeded in what the idea was supposed to be. I wanted it to be terrifying and urgent and no bullshit – just in, out, see you later." The album will be released on May 7th via White Whale Records.
