Queens Legend Kool G Rap Teams Up With Detroit Up-and-comers, The Left

The Song:

"Frozen," featuring Kool G Rap, is the latest song off of Gas Mask, the debut album from Detroit hip-hop trio The Left, comprised of producer Apollo Brown, rapper Journalist103, and DJ Soko. An ominous introduction of horns and a chanting vocal sample setup the hard-hitting lyrics of "Frozen." Ironically eloquent, the first verse of the track is a metaphor comparing the addictive nature of dope to The Left's music: "From the time you stick the disc in/ It's the same feeling that a heroin addict gets when he sticks the syringe in/ I put you in a deep nod, back and forth constant/ Once I get in your system there's no way you can stop it... I make you spend that last for that work in that plastic." It's evident that throughout the song, The Left and Kool G Rap, together, possess a certain maturity that enables them to transform something raw and gritty into a relatable and accessible piece of music. According to DJ Soko, the main inspiration for "Frozen" derives from the "drive and hunger for dope music, and the lengths that people will go to get their hands on the newest, best music."

For Apollo Brown, it was his own quests for the best music that brought him to wanting to work with Kool G Rap on the album. "I've always wanted to do a joint with Kool G. Rap," says the rising producer. "He's without a doubt one of my favorite emcees of all time. He and Journalist just fit the beat, and meshed on the song as a whole. Journalist came in the studio to cut the song and I surprised him with the vocals from Kool G. Rap and we just went from there."

The Left's Gas Mask, featuring appearances from Guilty Simpson, Kool G Rap, Finale, Invincible, Marv Won, and more is available now via Mello Music Group.

The Background:

The Left began as a simple phone conversation between two artists displaying mutual respect for each other's craft. Detroit staples Apollo Brown (Producer) and Journalist 103 (Emcee) turned the prospect of a couple random songs into an album considered by many tastemakers to be the best underground hip hop LP of 2010. Shortly after starting the album in early 2009, the duo brought in DJ Soko to provide cuts for the album and act as the official DJ for The Left's live performances. Gas Mask is indeed The Left's debut album, but the rookie producer Apollo Brown has certainly been accumulating accolades as of late. In 2008 he won the producer showcase at Scribble Jam. Then, in 2009, Apollo won the Detroit Red Bull Big Tune Championships and went on to the Atlanta Finals. In 2010 he signed with Mello Music Group and made waves with his scorching debut album, The Reset. Meanwhile, The Left's mic master, Journalist 103, is just as seasoned. Despite this being his first wide public display, he worked with the legendary Detroit emcee Proof of D12 before his passing.
