Thizzler On The Roof & SMKA Prep Darkest Before Dawn Mixtape, Available For Free Download October 4
The Song:
Last week, Thizzler On The Roof and Atlanta production crew SMKA released "Greatness," the latest single from Darkest Before Dawn, which pairs a mix of the Bay Area's most talented established and up-and-coming rappers atop SMKA production. The song starred Oakland fast-rap specialists Shady Blaze and Young Gully, and Shady Blaze and SMKA's Mike Walbert recently chopped it up with SF Weekly about the track. Today, as the October 4th release date for Darkest Before Dawn approaches, Thizzler and SMKA are releasing the tape's latest single, which pairs Roach Gigz and IamSu! for the song "Ain't A Thing."
According to Matt Moretti and Matt Werner of Thizzler, the pairing of Roach and Su! for "Ain't A Thing," premiered today by The FADER, was the first that came to mind when they first started working together with SMKA for the tape. "We wanted to put together artists whose musical personalities fit well," says Matt Morretti, who refers to Roach and Su! as two of the front-runners in the rising Bay scene. "They both have the ability to make listeners laugh, but also have the technical ability to impress purists."
The track does well to show off the range and diversity that Roach and Su! both bring to their music. SMKA sets the tone, with a looping, breezy, sample-driven beat, which Su! kicks off with a melodic hook, singing, "If you ain't got no money, then you got a thing for me/ Phonies come around, trying to hop on the team with me/ They just fascinated with the hoes and the greenery." Roach opens the first verse with his typically endearing wordplay ("You're gonna feel me in this bitch, like a pat-down"), as the two trade bars on what it means to be famous in their hometown.
