The Video:

It's no secret that SL Jones is a dedicated fan of screwed music; growing up in Little Rock, just a few short hours north of Texas, the budding rapper was raised on the original Screw tapes that made their way north up I-30. Screwed music has permeated his own music dating back to the release of his 2009 mixtape C.O.L.O.R.S., and now SL has teamed up with Atlanta's DJ DiBiase to release The Number 23: S.L.A.B. Edition (Screwed x Chopped).

The tape, clocking in at 15 tracks, pulls from SL's 2011 mixtape The Number 23, and includes fan favorites "Paper Cuts," "Trapped Out" featuring Yo Gotti and Pill, and more. The true standout, though, is "Swervin'" featuring Houston's own Trae Tha Truth, with the two rappers trading bars over drifting piano loop that sounds right at home at its new slowed, crawling pace.

For DiBiase, who's been making a name of his own DJing around Atlanta, releasing his own mixtapes, and now co-curating his ongoing Presidential mix series with DJ Burn One, it was a shared love for the style that inspired him to add his touch to The Number 23. "We have a mutual appreciation for screwed music," explains DiBiase, "so it was only right to slow this one down for all the screw heads from Little Rock to ATL and beyond. Po' up, light up and enjoy."

The Background:

With the Rock on his back and a Razorbacks fitted cocked just so on his dome, rapper SL Jones is striking out in 2011 with a slew of new projects as he continues to put his hometown, Little Rock, Arkansas, on the map. Jones' new mixtape, The Number 23, was hosted by Don Cannon, and the retail re-release offered a slimmed-down non-DJ version that included two previously unreleased tracks, along with features from Pill, Waka Flocka, Killer Mike, Trae Tha Truth, Yo Gotti, Rocko, and more, along with production from Lex Luger, Don Cannon, Shawty Redd, and M16.
