The EP:

Last week, SL Jones announced his latest EP, Trapper's Delight. The seven-track project is produced entirely by M16, and the tape, hosted by Hoodrich/Grand Hustle's DJ MLK is out today exclusively through LiveMixtapes.

Few things weigh on the psyche like the uncertainty of one's future, and that's where SL Jones found himself just over a year ago, surrounded by federal agents and ultimately indicted on conspiracy charges. What ensued was a yearlong legal battle, some of the darkest times of SL's life, and with it came the darkest release of his career, Paraphernalia. Then, at the end of last year, the situation started to brighten – ultimately moving towards resolution – and with it, so did SL's outlook. "Trapper's Delight is kinda like – I won't say it's a celebration – but it's [the weight of that case] being lifted off," says Jones about his direction and inspiration for the new EP. "It's about overcoming adversity and coming out on top; it's about what you do after the mistakes, and that's what matters."

Like Paraphernalia, with Trapper's Delight SL again teamed up with a single producer, this time M16, the Alabama producer best known for tracks like "Duffle Bag Boy" by Playaz CircleYoung Jeezy's "I Do" Ft. Jay-Z & Andre 3000, and Yelawolf's Heart Of Dixie mixtape. And to help bring the project to life, SL also partnered with Hoodrich/Grand Hustle DJ, DJ MLK. "M16's production is so epic, and I've been working with him for a minute, so the chemistry was natural," explains SL of the collaboration. "And DJ MLK is a street music connoisseur; he was able to offer guidance and help to bring everything together."

While the uninitiated listener may hear Trapper's Delight as a sonic deviation, for long-time fans of SL Jones, the sounds on Trapper's Delight will feel familiar, drawing on the foundation that Jones laid on previous tapes like The Number 23 and Flight Risk. "I feel like Trapper's Delight picks up where Flight Risk left off, just better," says Jones, "My songwriting keeps improving; lyrically and technically, I'm improving." But, he notes, with Trapper's Delight, as with all of his projects, it's also about feel, about emotion, about connecting with the listener. "There's joy and pain in every word," says SL. "I want the world to feel me."

The Background:

With the Rock on his back and a Razorbacks fitted cocked just so on his dome, Little Rock, Arkansas, rapper SL Jones first hit the scene as part of Killer Mike's Grind Time Rap Gang, releasing his now-classic C.O.L.O.R.S. (Bangin' On Wax) mixtape. It wasn't long after that SL knew he had to strike out on his own, and beginning in 2011 he did just that, starting with the release of The Number 23, hosted by Don Cannon. Closing out 2011, SL Jones released his Flight Risk mixtape, and together, the two mixtapes garnered strong reviews from XXL Magazine and Atlanta's leading alternative weekly, Creative Loafing, while earning the young gunner accolades from FADER, Complex, The Source, HipHopDX, The Smoking Section, Nah Right, RCRD LBL, Dirty Glove Bastard, and more, including a sit down with MTV News' Mixtape Daily and a nationally televised "On Deck" feature with MTV2's Sucker Free. In 2012, SL Jones released Paraphernalia, a collaborative effort with producer DJ Burn One that included features from Freddie Gibbs, Rittz, and more. To start 2013, SL Jones released a new EP, Trapper's Delight, produced by M16 and hosted by Hoodrich/Grand Hustle's DJ MLK, which is out now via LiveMixtapes.
