The Session:

When we last visited the boys of Sad Baby Wolf in December, the band had just released their first two singles, “Survival Guide” and “8th Level.” Thanks to the success of those tracks, SBW has experienced a surge of attention and activity that's unusual for a relatively new band. Aside from finishing up their debut album, due out this spring, the Albuquerque natives are also gearing up to release a special Neutral Milk Hotel cover as well as preppping for some soon to be announced summer festival dates. They even had to multitask during their most recent trip to San Francisco, where they stopped by Daytrotter to record a live session before performing at Noise Pop’s 20th Anniversary Festival.

Included in the Daytrotter live session are three new songs along with “Survival Guide,” and a write-up by Daytrotter founder, Sean Moeller. After hearing SBW play live, he mused about their overall vibe, saying, “[Marty] Crandall, his drummer brother Maury Crandall, guitartist Jason Ward, bassist Sean McCullough and guitarist Neal Langford have this new thing that sounds like sad wolves. It sounds like old wolves though, not baby ones. They are wolves that have been through many winters. They know what they can take and they know that they can't judge their capacity either. They're okay with goodbyes, because it only means that the next thing out of their mouths will be hellos and that couldn't be more reassuring.”

The Background:

The band was conceived during a homecoming of sorts—not in the heat of a romantic dalliance, but a brotherly collaboration. Sad Baby Wolf formed in 2010 when lead singer, Marty Crandall, who had just been "let go" from The Shins, returned to his hometown of Albuquerque for a visit. An old friend with roots in the Albuquerque music scene of yore was seriously ill and hosting a benefit concert to offset medical expenses. Hot air balloon pilot and fellow-former-Shins guitarist Neal Langford was a natural collaborator for what they assumed was a quick, one-off gig. Along with another long-time buddy and musician, Jason Ward, and Marty's brother Maury Crandall on drums, they pasted together a set of two covers and two originals. It was a slap-dash rush to compose the new songs, yet they found that it felt oddly, exhilaratingly effortless. The feeling persisted through the performance. Fast forward to late 2011, and Sad Baby Wolf are finally ready to release their debut single, "8th Level" / "Survival Guide". With a full length album planned for spring of 2012 and frequent gigs, the men of young Sad Baby Wolf contiunue to devleop their nascent sound. Beware of fangs and talons quivering in wait...
