	Bay Area Emcees Commemorate Three-Month Anniversary Of Oscar Grant Verdict, All Proceeds Donated to Grant's Family

The Song: West Coast rapper Roach Gigz is featured on fellow Bay Area artist Young Gully's song "What If" off of his album *Grant Station. Gully's album was inspired by the July 8th verdict of the New Years Day 2009 killing of Oscar Grant in Oakland, CA. The incidence involved a police officer shooting a young man in what was debated as an accidental or intentional death, the ruling of which upset many in the Oakland and surrounding communities. Young Gully's Grant Station* channels the emotions of those frustrations into a communal expression, calling for justice against senseless police brutality. The album is for sale for $1 (or more - the buyer can choose whatever prices they want to pay) with all proceeds being donated to Oscar Grant's family. "What If" is a haunting and provocative question offered by the two rappers, asking the listener to consider the world with reversed roles. Roach Gigz conjures the scenario of being wrongly arrested by him, inspiring the very fear and uncertainty that was reinforced by the Grant killings. Straying quite far from his role as a man who loves to have fun, Roach Gigz demonstrates the versatility and unquestionable passion that have helped to make him one of the Bay Areas most prominent voices. Roach is currently preparing his second mixtape *Roachy Balboa 2, which also has a track dealing with the Oscar Grant situation called "The Moment." On November 5th, the date of the sentencing of the police officer Johannes Mehserle, Roach will be releasing a new video for "The Moment." The Background: Selected as one of 106 KMEL's Top 10 Freshman Rappers of the Bay Area, 21-year-old San Francisco native Roach Gigz has gone from virtually unknown to one of the hottest artists on the West Coast in just four years. Born and raised in the Bay Area Roach was conceived in Nicaragua during the Contra and Sandinista war. His father was a supporter of the Sandinista Liberation Front and has never lived in the United States but Roach's mom moved to California and raised him as a single mother. Needless to say his upbringing was very complex so being a white rapper in a predominantly Black and Latin dominated business is not an issue for Roach. "I'm just being myself and I think my fans see that. It ain't about race; it's about the music." Named after a combination of the character Roach from the movie *Next Friday* and his high school days dancing skills, Roach Gigz first gained local fame with close friend Lil 4Tay as one half of the group Bitch I Go (B.I.G.). Now, with two successful mixtapes under his belt Roach is currently preparing his debut album, tentatively titled *Therapy Sessions*, which is scheduled to be released this fall. The album is shaping up to be a very personal one. Roach says the music will touch on the ups and downs of his life from the struggles he's been through growing up in the Bay to the birth of his newborn son.
