(Brooklyn,
NY - February 10, 2009) For the past five weeks, the Metermaids hosted
a remix contest inviting fans to submit their remixed versions of the Metermaids'
song "Nightlife."
With the contest coming to an end, the Metermaids selected two prize-winning
submissions. The grand prize winner receives a copy of Reason 4,
a Metermaids remix track featured as a free download on iTunes and another remix
track featured on the Metermaids' MySpace page and official website. The runner
up receives two signed copies of the Metermaids album Nightlife, two Metermaids
t-shirts, and Metermaids stickers.
The winning remixes, chosen by the Metermaids themselves,
feature an eclectic range of production aesthetics and willingness by contestants
to breathe new life into the Metermaids' music. The grand prize winner's remix,
created by user System: C, features a sped up tempo from the original song, complete
with a rave bassline and classic pinball sound effects. The runner up's remix,
created by user ALB 33, is an ambient groove characterized by its echoing guitar
chords and airy synth drones, complemented well by a jazzy hip-hop drumbeat that
gives the remix its driven pulse. The contest was inspired by the Metermaids
recent EP Nightlife In Illinoise, which is their own mashup of their Nightlife
album with Sufjan Stevens' album Illinoise. Combining beats and a capellas from
Nightlife with the indie-folk music of Stevens' Illinoise, the pair have created
a unique remix collection that highlights their production abilities.

MixMatchMusic.com,
a web service that helps artists engage their fans by getting them more involved
in the production process, hosted the contest. The Metermaids used Remix
Wizard,
a free widget offered by Mix Match Music that allows artists to load the vocals,
bass, drums and any other elements of a track and invite fans to create a remix
of the track. The Metermaids not only gave their fans a chance to become more
aware of the creation of a track, but also gave themselves the opportunity to
interact with listeners and hear several different interpretations of their song
as developed by their own fans.
Hailing from New York City, the Metermaids are
Swell and Sentence, two emcees who met through
the local underground hip-hop scene in 2006. After releasing their debut EP the
same year, the duo toured with the likes of Brand Nubian, Atmosphere,
Sage Francis, Fabulous, Lady Bug Mecca (Digable Planets), The Lox, and Camp
Lo. After this extensive and impressive
tour, the duo released their first full-length effort in 2008 entitled Nightlife,
exemplifying their choice to create a new sound in crossover music, blending
indie rock with hip-hop. Their latest mashup project goes even further into this
realm, with the duo choosing to mix their beats with the music of Sufjan Stevens.
The
Nightlife In Illinoise EP is available for free at the group's official
website.
