The Song:
After two decades of amassing a catalog of face-rocking, stoner-metal music, Houston's Linus Pauling Quartet is set to release their epic career retrospective album, Assault on the Vault of the Ancient Bonglords on December 18th. Following the track "Drunkest Man," their first offering from AVABL, LP4 is now debuting the second single, "Southern Pine."
Mostly the brainchild of Clinton Heider, vocals and guitar for LP4, "Southern Pine" plays with the dichotomy of soft and loud. "We were kind of stuck, since we had either heavy riff heavy songs or softer material," says Ramon, also vocals/guitar. "We really hadn't figured out a way to fuse those things until Clinton came up with this one." Clinton describes the track as, "one of the more ambitious things we had done musically," and attributes it to opening up more possibilities of what they could do as a band.
The song, which premiered on Surviving the Golden Age, is a dreamy ode to living life for yourself, free from external baggage. "Most of the stuff you have been worrying about isn't worth carrying around with you," says Clinton. "And, it's a sin to live somebody else's life; you should live your own." Inspired by road trips through Texas' Big Thicket National Preserve, "Southern Pine" balances soft, mellow verses with massive heavy riffs, and celebrates the simplicity of wasting time under southern pines.
