Critical Praise for Lightouts
:
Named one of SPIN's 2012 CMJ "Next Big Things"

"Definitely a band to look out for, Lightouts have the potential to be massive."
- The Music Ninja

"... perfect for lovers of the nu-nu-wave of '90s-gone-feral punkos like Parquet Courts and PAWS. Check out these cloud somethings." - Chris Weingarten, SPIN

"It is kind of like The Talking Heads ate a shit load of pot brownies with The Replacements while watching a jam band cover Blondie."
- SYFFAL

The Song:

Next week, on March 5th, Brooklyn fuzz-rockers Lightouts will release their debut album, Want. The album, two long years in the making, brings together bending, distorted guitar riffs with light, floating vocal melodies – a collection of music that's been praised by the likes of SPIN Magazine, licensed by the likes of Nissan, and which has earned the Gowanus, Brooklyn, foursome the opportunity to perform at primetime festivals like SXSW, CMJ, and the inaugural CBGB Festival. Today, as album release approaches Lighouts are releasing the album's newest single, title track "Want."

"Want" is one of the true standouts from the new album – so much so that Lighouts was recently chosen to perform the track for Entourage star Adrien Grenier's WRECKROOM.tv – and after giving the song a listen it's easy to hear why. "Want" begins with a bouncy bass line and feedback-heavy guitar riffs, before opening up full on with thick, sweet chords, courtesy of guitarist Gavin Rhodes. The song's vocals, sang in condensed airy couplets, reach their apex as singer Nelson builds towards the track's refrain belting out, "Teach me how/ To not want anything."

The Background:

Lightouts founder Gavin Rhodes started with a simple question: "Robert Smith/Emily Haines, where are you?" But this appeal to fans of The Cure and Metric didn't appear on Craigslist or in The Village Voice. The flyer was posted near the less-than-picturesque Gowanus Canal. Greg Nelson, a veteran of the NYC music scene, responded to the ad and the rest, as they say, is history. The group exhibit a rare musical and stylistic cohesion: structured bass lines, waves of fuzzed out guitars and vaporous vocals put a new spin on the moody post-punk aesthetic of bands like Joy Division and Smashing Pumpkins circa Siamese Dream. In the past two years, the Gowanus band has released a series of singles that featured both an A-side and two B-sides, which allowed the band to offer up songs complemented by experimentation and deep-cut covers. The band's debut album, Want, will be released on March 5th, 2013
