The Video:

Detroit-based musicians Joshua and Daniel are two men making up a band named after one man - Dale Earnhardt Jr. However their moniker, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., is a fictional addition to the Earnhardt Nascar dynasty, and this habit of blending of fantastical imagination with a firm grasp on mundane and real-world events is a prominent theme for the band. They are infinitely playful and earnest, which is enough for this to be incredibly charming.

Their music is rather endearing too - "a quasi-psych mix of folk, hip-hop inspired drum programming, and effervescent pop" - that fills up the greenscreen recording studio with melodic Beatles-like simplicity. It is catchy and cute but heartfelt and cool as well. Visually, Josh and Daniel are in the zone, beginning to sweat under the lights in their eBay-sourced Nascar suits. Both the outfits and the video, which is for the song "Simple Girl," are covered in logos, making it clear that the visuals act merely as an extension of the band itself.

The Project:

Green Screening was the brainchild of Brooklyn-based, Virginia-native director Drew Norton. Over the past year he has been working independently with indie labels such as Rough Trade and Barsuk to create music videos for up-and-coming acts that bring to life their sound, represent the band's brand, and also get traction and exposure online. Drew wanted to work collaboratively with artists and create a faster-turnaround production model and to get the Green Screening project off the ground has managed to raise thousands of dollars via crowd-funding site Kickstarter.

Twenty-eight talented acts signed-up to come to Seaside Lounge studios in Park Slope, rented out especially by Drew, to lay down a live track for at no expense to the artist or label. They all performed in recording space decked-out in full "greenscreen" backdrops so that bespoke visuals could be added in afterward. This event was held in parallel to the CMJ Music Marathon in October 2010, a time when many bands were in town to showcase their music, and when the spotlight was on the Brooklyn scene. Some of the bands involved include Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Ava Luna, The Dewars, Lightouts, Tanya Morgan and many more.
