The Song & Video:
Fatlip of The Pharcyde took self-deprecation to new heights with the autobiographical "What's Up Fatlip" when it was first released in 2000. Now for Delicious Vinyl's RMXXOLOGY, Breakbot's RMX turns this record into a breezy summer jam. Breakbot, one of France's underground darlings, is known for his breakbeat-infused remixes and the good times they inspire. Fatlip & Breakbot's combination of talents makes this a favorite worth revisiting.
While the video is lighthearted, the subject of the song is bittersweet. Referencing his temporary fall from grace, Fatlip talks about some of his darkest times: "My voice is wack / Clowns is runnin' around, talkin' 'bout I smoke crack / Ain't got no homies that got my back / Yeah I'm a brotha, but some times I don't feel black / My girl is white / My game ain't tight / Ni##as who ain't seen me in a while be like "Dude, you aight?" Underneath Fatlip's dynamic flow, Breakbox subs in that playful piano featured in the background of the original track. He uses a combination of bells, synths, and whistles to highlight a funk-driven, heavy bassline. He turns it up an extra notch by accentuating the youthful vibe of the song, adding cricket song and chirps.
If the remix weren't enough to hook you, the video is sure to reel you in. It's hilarious in the way that scene from Office Space where the crew smashes the computer to the tune of "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" is. Directed by Spike Jonez, it's a mish-mash documentary of Fatlip just bein' Fatlip, whether he's in a clown suit being smacked around by a six-year-old or doing the running man in a diaper and a trench coat.
