The Song:

In 2010, DaVinci, a largely unknown rapper from the historic Fillmore District of San Francisco, California, took the rap world by storm, releasing his debut album, The Day The Turf Stood Still. The album was a breakthrough, showing the mind state of a young black male – one who grew up hustling to survive – who watches uncertain as his beloved neighborhood changes in front of his eyes due to gentrification and urban renewal that forced many of his peers out. And now, DaVinci is excited to release the follow-up, his new Feast Or Famine EP, which will be made available for free download on August 24th through DaVinci's label, SWTBRDS.

On TDTTSS DaVinci largely went it alone, eschewing high profile guests and choosing instead to let his voice be heard. And while Feast Or Famine finds DaVinci working alongside a variety of his peers throughout the eight tracks, lead single "D.R.E.A.M.," an acronym that plays off Wu-Tang's "C.R.E.A.M." and stands for Dope Rules Everything Around Me, finds DaVinci going for dolo as he brings listeners into a world of harsh realities and conflicted decisions.

"I wanted to bring people into the mind of a young man whose entire world – his friends, family, school, community – is flooded with drug abuse and dope distribution," explains DaVinci. "The song isn't a celebration; I wanted to give people a clear visual of the events that lead up to making a 'hustle or die' decision," and DaVinci provides a clear visual, indeed, with lines like, "Dream first ask questions last/ Trying to do my best to stay awake in class/ Teacher can't show me how to make no cash/ But my ni**as on the block sure make it fast."

To accompany the single, and help break down what Feast Or Famine is all about, DaVinci is also releasing the "Feast Or Famine" video. A collaboration between Chasen Paper and Johan Thomas, the video offers a chilling, black-and-white visual that plays out like a mini-documentary as DaVinci narrates many of the same dichotomies detailed in "D.R.E.A.M.," and throughout Feast Or Famine: "A single right or wrong decision can be the difference between eating and starving."

The Background:

The Fillmore District has bred more rappers per capita than any other district in San Francisco, and although the older generations recall its rich musical history rooted in Jazz, the Fillmore today is rife with drugs, turf wars, and mass gentrification. DaVinci, a young MC raised in the Fillmore, is a prime example of the duality of this area, who at the age of 13 was homeless, hungry, and hopeful for a way out. Explains DaVinci, "My music has everything to do with my environment: from robbing, killing, pimpin' to selling and abusing drugs," he explains about his heavy content. "It's a direct reflection of what my friends and family have been through and are still going through." While his story is similar to many other young rappers’ upbringings, DaVinci was surrounded by an incredible pool of Fillmore talent and by studying with the greats, he was able to sharpen his skills and aim higher than most, cultivating his story-telling abilities beyond mere drug-and-gun-talk. Growing up in the same 10-block radius as Bay Area rap legends San Quinn and JT the Bigga Figga, DaVinci was content in merely watching the next generation follow in their footsteps, until he received overwhelming praise from his peers from a mixtape appearance, which then prompted him to pursue rap professionally. In 2006, San Quinn welcomed him onto the "Pressure Makes Diamonds Tour" with rap veterans Xzibit and Tech N9ne. Since the tour, DaVinci has kept busy appearing on numerous mixtapes and compilations, as well as preparing his official debut album, The Day The Turf Stood Still. The Day The Turf Stood Still is available now via SWTBRDS Creative Collective.
