The Videos:

Fillmore District emcee DaVinci, fresh from the March 9th release of his debut album The Day The Turf Stood Still, recently took some time out from his rhyme spree for video interviews with both Ignantwitted and Thizzler On The Roof's "Under The Bay" series. First, DaVinci stopped off in NY to chop it up with Ignantwitted and discussed his hometown, inspirations, the hyphy movement and details on the new album. "Being from the Bay - you can definitely tell that that's influenced my style" explains DaVinci. "That’s the perfect place for me to start with this first album... is to give everybody a visual of what I came from, and then take them as far as I can after that." The Bay Area native also drops some knowledge on gentrification and it's impact on the community and country at large before breaking off some hot bars for the camera. Back on the left coast, DaVinci spoke with Thizzler On The Roof as part of their 'Under The Bay' series. While touching on subjects such as his lifelong love of hip-hop, song making process and motivations, DaVinci also shed some light on the man behind the mic. "[DaVinci is] a dude who paints pictures with words from the hood's perspective - right here in the Fillmore." The young emcee also reveals plans for the future, which involves tour possibilities and a return to the studio for another lyrical masterpiece from the Fillmore.

DaVinci will be performing tonight, Friday, March 26th at 9:30PM, as part of the the New World Color event at The Listening Lounge in San Francisco, CA. Playing at 111 Minna Gallery (111 Minna Street), DaVinci will be spitting rhymes alongside New World Color artists Blu & Mainframe, while fellow San Francisco natives Cedication.Crimes, Xariusound and Ronostalgia will also be on hand for sets of their own. Don't miss this chance to see Bay Area's finest in action - tickets are only $5 before 10:30PM with RSVP. RSVP at http://sanfrancisco.going.com/listeninglounge

The Background:

The Fillmore District has bred more rappers per capita than any other district in San Francisco, and although the older generations recall its rich musical history rooted in Jazz, the Fillmore today is rife with drugs, turf wars, and mass gentrification. DaVinci, a young MC raised in the Fillmore, is a prime example of the duality of this area, who at the age of 13 was homeless, hungry, and hopeful for a way out. Explains DaVinci, "My music has everything to do with my environment: from robbing, killing, pimpin' to selling and abusing drugs," he explains about his heavy content. "It's a direct reflection of what my friends and family have been through and are still going through." While his story is similar to many other young rappers’ upbringings, DaVinci was surrounded by an incredible pool of Fillmore talent and by studying with the greats, he was able to sharpen his skills and aim higher than most, cultivating his story-telling abilities beyond mere drug-and-gun-talk. Growing up in the same 10-block radius as Bay Area rap legends San Quinn and JT the Bigga Figga, DaVinci was content in merely watching the next generation follow in their footsteps, until he received overwhelming praise from his peers from a mixtape appearance, which then prompted him to pursue rap professionally. In 2006, San Quinn welcomed him onto the "Pressure Makes Diamonds Tour" with rap veterans Xzibit and Tech N9ne. Since the tour, DaVinci has kept busy appearing on numerous mixtapes and compilations, as well as preparing his official debut album, The Day The Turf Stood Still. The Day The Turf Stood Still is availbale now via SWTBRDS Creative Collective.
