The Song:
In late 2011, rapper M.I. and producer DJ Cutt, collectively known as Constant Deviants, released Platinum: The Mixtape, a project that found the Brooklyn- and Baltimore-based duo mixing all original tracks with a handful of industry favorites. The project did well to show off the duo's range and diversity, important in today's ever-changing hip-hop landscape, where genres are defined and re-defined weekly, monthly, and yearly. Certain sounds are timeless, though, and with their latest string of all-original non-album tracks – a handful of songs that will precede their forthcoming Diamond album – Constant Deviants are taking it back to their roots. And with their latest leak, "Forever," the duo, as the title suggests, shows their greatest strength: timeless, boom-bap-driven hip-hop.
DJ Cutt produces a soft, electronic-sampling beat for M.I., and he graces it with his own smooth flow and boastful lyrics, a combination that pulls from the chemistry the pair have developed over years working together. "This song is an everyday Constant Deviants collabo," explains M.I. "Cutt sent me the beat; I wrote the verses, and we came together to lay the hook." As for the message of the song, much like their classic sound, Constant Deviants, who have built a strong following selling vinyl independently around the world, are here to stay. "We will be here forever!" exclaims M.I.

The
Background:
In the world of hip-hop, a name carries the weight of an entire career. It's the brand, the logo, but most importantly the mission of the group. For Constant Deviants, it's a title that has grown with them over time: constantly changing, departing from the norm. Forming their own imprint SIX2SIX Records in 2009, the group consists of the traditional MC and DJ combination with M.I. (Mr. Impossible) on the microphone and D.J. CUTT behind the tables and beats. With their sights currrently set on the 2012 release of their newest project Diamond, the Deviants are preparing fans for the unheralded return of real rap music with the album's precursor, entitled Platinum: The Mixtape, available now for free download via Bandcamp.
