Critical Praise For Clinton Curtis:

"He's taken the best Caribbean influences, mixed them with his favorite R&B, added some influential soul a little skiffle and some country and western and served the whole dish up for you to adopt as part of the soundtrack of your life."
- Time Out New York

"Curtis has a strong dosage of Bruce Springsteen-the-storyteller in him."- SPIN magazine

The Song:

It goes with out saying that singer/songwriter, Clinton Curtis, who was raised in Western Jamaica by dancehall owners and taught the tricks of the trade by local giants Gregory Isaacs and Desmond Dekker, draws inspiration from his predecessors. Last month with the release of 2nd AVENUE BALL, his sophomore album, Curtis also released a cover of Jimi Hendrix’ "One Rainy Wish," and continuing his tradition of covers he's now decided take on rock icon Bruce Springsteen, releasing a new cover of his song "Incident On 57th Street."

Clintons’ unparalleled ability to take on rock's classic tracks, and restructure them while maintaining the integrity that made them great in the first place, seems to have come easy to a musician who felt otherwise. Springsteen's original was groove heavy and full of lengthy interludes, but Curtis transforms the track into a five-minute high-octane experience, led by highly technical instrumentation full of piano, organ, electric and acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and glockenspiel ("A must for most Springsteen songs," says Curtis), that culminates with a monster sax solo courtesy of James Casey. "It takes a lot of nerve to cover the Boss -- so I figured the only chance I had was to go with a relatively obscure track like '57th Street,'" Curtis explains, "I tried to condense our version, and just let the story get out. We flipped all of the grooves around, and really tried to pull a hook-laden pop song from Bruce's free-form structure."

The Background:

Clinton Curtis grew up between the islands of Jamaica and Key West. The son of musicians and reggae dance hall owners, Clinton was always surrounded by music and as a child he learned from local greats, including Gregory Isaacs and Desmond Dekker. By the time he was 5 years old, Clinton was considered a classical piano prodigy and by the age of 10, he had picked up the guitar and bass. When he turned 17, Clinton moved to New York to study acting at NYU, and decided to write and perform his original music. While gigging around town, Clinton caught the attention of producer Matt Stine and signed to Stine's indie label 27 Sound. Under his new label, Clinton's first album, Smoldering Youth, was released thus unveiling Clinton's self-proclaimed style of "21st century rock & roll" to the world. After successfully touring the East Coast and selling over 2,000 records, Clinton is teaming up with Stine again to release his second full-length album, 2nd Avenue Ball, available now.
