Critical Praise For Anthem Facility:
"'Left To Defend' is probably my favorite track off of Trace, because it doesn't try to do too much with its sound. I hate to say that it's great thinking music because that's such a cliche statement, but it is." - In Audio We Trust
"Their debut track "Trace" is a melodic languor driven by synth-infused, repetitive, staggering beats impassioned by a fervently sensual and hushed voice." - Procrastinate then Combust
"Been a while since I've found something this sultry." - Head Underwater
The
Song:
On their first single "Trace," from their five-song EP of the same name, Anthem Facility, the electronic project of Stephen Hermann, established itself as more than just a 30-second wonder. Expanding on the acclaim of "Trace's" poignant feature in Dell laptop commercials last year, Hermann turned the audio bed into a full, fleshed out song and EP project. Understanding his newfound fans' loyalty and attraction to vocalist Melati Malay (Lavalier, Young Magic), who was featured on the original song, Hermann found it pertinent to recruit her for the full project.
The second single, "Left to Defend," expands on the duo's vibrant sound, but chooses to replace the catchiness of "Trace" with subdued and spacious soundscapes, much in the same vain as an act like Zero 7 and other trip-hop peers. And although you would never guess it, Hermann cites Velvet Underground as a sonic influence. The downtempo ambience is warm and inviting, largely thanks to Malay's soothing and trailing vocals, which were built around Fender Rhodes chord progressions. Occasionally, those vocal layers are cast off into the billowy atmosphere that Hermann effortlessly creates never to be seen, or rather heard from again.

The
Background:
Anthem Facility is the latest creation of New York based producer Stephen Hermann, who has been making music for over 20 years. By teaming up with Melati Malay, an accomplished NYC vocalist in her own right, Anthem Facility has created a nitch for itself in the ever-evolving musical genre indie-tronica. The collective was originally conceived for more commercial purposes, but eventually evolved into a personal endeavor for Hermann and Malay. While working on a campaign for Dell Computers, Herman was hired to compose original music for the brand. Out of that promotion, Anthem facility was born. Their debut EP Trace will be released this fall on Hermann's new label, exro.FM.
