AT’s Tommy Morello to Address The State of Hip-Hop at CMJ
Audible Treats’ very own Tommy Morello will be sitting alongside legendary rapper KRS-One, Hangar 18’s Tim Baker, and 1600 Avenue founder Frank Satterwhite on a panel entitled “The State of Hip-Hop Address” moderated by AllHipHop.com Founder Chuck Creekmur at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon. Tommy is Chief Editor of AT’s international hip-hop blog Flight 808, contributing writer and editor at UndergroundHipHop.com, a DJ on WOBC, and a full-time student at Oberlin College. Busy guy! The panel will take place Friday, October 19 from 3:45 to 5:15pm at the Kimmel Center’s E&L Auditorium (60 Washington Square South).
Iller Than Theirs, with its old-school-flavored, jazz and soul-splashed beats and interesting, just-your-regular-guy rhymes, hits the mark, avoiding the ridiculousness and pretension that has seemed to have overridden much of hip-hop — both mainstream and underground — in the early part of the 21st century, making, overall, for a pretty satisfying release.
Sounds good to me. Also, under their “moods” category, they classify the release as “Fun, Reflective, Energetic, Passionate, Playful, Confident, Rousing,” and “Exuberant”. Those are all very nice adjectives that should stretch out your vocabulary muscles as well. So go get the album that has the moods you are looking for, out now!
On Saturday September 29th, Iller Than Theirs will celebrate the release of their album, also called Iller Than Theirs, at New York City’s Mercury Lounge. With a 10-dollar bill (or two fives, ten ones, or some combination) and 21+ ID, you can be there - the rest of the Nuclear Family will, as will Def Jukies Hangar 18, and more!
In the meantime, peep the flier (courtesy of Iller’s tatoo’d half Tone Tank), and clear your appointments for that night.
With Musab’s album “Slick’s Box” all but dropped on the public (just one more week), we thought we’d give you a little peek into the world of the producer who laid down the beats for the album - a man by the name of King Karnov. You can see him on this video putting together a pretty slick beat, as well as riding around blowing what looks like a Viking horn.
Then, compare your notes with the beats Karnov penned for “Slick’s Box,” especially on “Hat & Shoes.” Don’t forget to order the album “Slick’s Box” from your musical merchant of choice.
Rapnetwork’s Record Breakers charts just told us that Knobody’s single “What U Think” was this week’s #1 top added song! The Rapnetwork charts follow college radio stations across the US, so it looks like our boy outta Oakland is down with the college kids - a real sign that he’s getting up.
Alright dudes, I guess that means we’ll see you on the quad after the kegger.
On the off chance that any of our readers are reppin’ Minneapolis, we’ve got some news for you! Musab, the official Southside Mack, is returning to his home town to throw a party as only he can. If you’re 21+, head over to The Foundation for Musab’s CD Release Party/Video Premiere Party/Birthday Bash on September 23rd at 9 PM. There’s good music, free food, cake and a special guest…who doesn’t love that? Remember to look you best - you know Musab will!

Dudley Perkins of G&D recently sat down for an interview with Chris Z of Planet Urban. Sit back, relax and listen to Dudley’s thoughts on:
- making music for the divine spirits
- the first number of the American numerical system
- foreign language from some other ship
- saving the children and stopping wars
- playing spoons
- the Mayan Calendar’s prediction for 2012
- and finally, the love stuff.
