MP3: Mikey Dollaz – “Waddup/Who Betta” (prod. by SALVA)

The Mass Appeal-Debuted Track Finds the Chicago Rapper and Los Angeles Producer Joining Forces for Another Banger

04.25.2016

Critical Praise:

“There’s something in the water in Chicago. The energy that a lot of their artists come with can be infectious (Chance the Rapper), grimy (L.E.P. Bogus Boys-R.I.P.), or in your face raw. Mikey Dollaz can be seen as the new ambassador for the last variety.” – Mass Appeal

“[Picture Me Rollin’] does display Dollaz’ astonishing versatility, with everything from trappy ballads to trunk-rattling EDM-influenced bangers to straight up party anthems” – HotNewHipHop

The Song:

Chicago drill emcee Mikey Dollaz nimbly navigates SALVA‘s production like a sledgehammer doing ballet. On his new track, “Waddup/Who Betta,” Mikey Dollaz attacks two different beats from the Los Angeles producer and BBC Radio 1 DJ with blunt force, complementing but not overpowering SALVA’s minimalist production. Debuted by Mass Appeal, “Waddup/Who Betta” is another addition in what is becoming a fruitful rapper/producer relationship. Mikey Dollaz and SALVA previously connected with King Louie on the Art of Noise-sampled “Forever Be Dat Guy,”as gunshots punctuated what seemed to be a tranquil love tune flipping it into a boastful drill anthem. HYPETRAK praised “Forever Be Dat Guy,” noting the rappers’ “catchy triplet flows over the hard-hitting instrumental.”

“Waddup/Who Betta” follows a cavalcade of quality Mikey Dollaz videos released in 2016. Earlier this month, HYPETRAK premiered the hedonistic video for “Forever Be Dat Guy” alongside a Q&A with Mikey Dollaz. Last month, The FADER premiered a video for “Hot Boy,” a beat-shifting party anthem produced by Obey City of Lucky Me.  “Hot Boy” quickly followed the releases of videos for the Sonny Digital-produced “Good As It Gets,” premiered by HipHopDX, and “Flat Or Molly,” premiered by ACCLAIM Mag, as well as the video for the  Strict Face-produced “Fuck Me Right,” which Dummy Mag called a “visual concoction that entwines itself to the aquatic and crystalline sounds of Strict Face’s production.”

Mikey Dollaz’s Picture Me Rollin mixtape, which debuted last month via FACT Mag, finds Mikey Dollaz teaming up with Planet Mu’s Silk Road Assassins, Dun Deal, and Honorable C.N.O.T.E., in addition to the aforementioned contributions from Sonny Digital, Obey City, and Strict Face, to create a fusion of Electronic and Drill. In their review of Picture Me Rollin’HotNewHipHop said that the tape displays “Dollaz’ astonishing versatility, with everything from trappy ballads to trunk-rattling EDM-influenced bangers to straight up party anthems.” Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, street drama derailed a promising basketball career for Mikey Dollaz. After a prison stint, he invested himself in the city’s burgeoning hip-hop scene, linking with Tink and Dreezy. Mikey Dollaz’s Picture Me Rollin is available now.

Mikey Dollaz Background:

To watch Chicago’s Mikey Dollaz is to see an artist’s vision coming into focus in real time. In less than three short years, he’s grown from a competent drill rapper to a versatile lyricist. He sometimes picks themes for entire projects to keep himself on mission: the titles of Sex Music, Music on Drugz and the three Street Life tapes speak for themselves. He literally has more talent than he knows what to do with. In 2016, Mikey Dollaz finds himself established and ready to make a statement as an artist. Done workshopping his flows and test-driving various styles, he’s ready to break out of the midwest and reach for national acclaim with a proper album. Only a couple of years into his career, it’s clear Mikey is yet to reach the limit of his potential.
