Critical Praise for Marc E. Bassy:

“His bouncy flow channels the manic energy of Chance The Rapper; the animated style and tempered synths of “Cigarettes” could comfortably fit as a b-side to Acid Rap – SPIN

“We were able to give Marc his first ever solo performance at our SXSW Showcase, and it exceeded all expectations.” – Good Music All Day

“A very unique artist, you’ll want to tune in for 2014.” – Hypnotic Hippo

The Song:

San Francisco-based RnB singer/songwriter and rapper Marc E. Bassy is releasing his second single from his forthcoming EP, Only The Poets, with the track  “Over The Water” premiering today at Complex. Opening with a welcoming steel drum motif, quickly followed by ebbing and flowing bassline and shimmying hi-hats, the track provokes images of Caribbean waves lapping at your feet, just in time for summer.

Although the tropical production, supplied by Count Bassy, Casper, and B, evokes a calming effect, the lyrics tell a different story. As a member of the successful LA-based elecro-pop group 2AM Club, Marc expresses his experiences of the superficiality and “permanent high school-ness” of Los Angeles and the entertainment industry first hand with lyrics such as “f*** these weak ass b****** / all they do is nothing / then they want your business, mane” and “where you think you goin? / on the way up / they birds and you know it now.” Explain Marc, “Everyone is running around doing selfish shit to get popular and it can be intoxicating, where you begin to believe that this superficiality is what matters. ‘Over The Water’ is about that and how it plays out in relationships; trying to get over all the obstacles that the LA scene place in the way of true shit.” Playing devil’s advocate is up-and-coming Bay Area rapper Chippass, who lends a verse extolling the virtues of being the “hot” thing of the moment.

For those who haven’t picked up on one of Marc’s biggest solo songs, we’d like to (re)introduce his song “Lock It Up” featuring  up-and-coming RnB songstress Kehlani. Clocking in over 220K listens on Soundcloud with no promotion, the sweet love song contains a clever flip of Erykah Badu’s “Bag Lady” to tell the tale of Marc and Kehlani letting their guard down, and giving themselves to one another, both physically and emotionally. With lyrics from both Marc, “girl you left the marks up on my spine / I think its time / I’m your territory,” and Kehlani, “don’t hide your intentions / don’t be scared to mention / that you want to hear me scream your name,” the track paints a vivid picture of giving yourself to someone. Explains Marc,”It’s about letting them lock you up, sharing a blunt together, and taking the plunge into chemically imbalanced, reality-induced, committed-relationshipness.”

Marc’s debut solo EP, Only The Poets, will be released on July 29th and features production by Count Bassy, The NICNACBEATS and Billion Coast.
