The Video:

Telling a twisted tale of devotion over sinister synth stabs, JAYLIEN explores the dark side of lust with “Lucky Guy.” Premiered last month by Ebro on Beats 1 Radio and debuted online by Pigeons & Planes, “Lucky Guy” is an addictive slice of psychedelic R&B, with compelling drama supporting the song’s atmosphere. Today, JAYLIEN returns with the “Lucky Guy” visual, a unique take on the lyric video. Displaying the lyrics as written notes, texts, and Shining-esque bathroom graffiti, the video ups the ante on the track’s twisted subject matter, transforming a typical rap video premise into your worst nightmare.

“I know I’m not the only one who’s been in a situation where you’re sleeping with someone’s partner and yet you feel he’s actually the lucky one because he gets to keep her,” explains JAYLIEN. “It’s a true story so everything kind of flowed out naturally from start to finish. Word for word, the song is me in a very frustrating place, kind of dark place. The lyrics and music had to match the emotion and be authentic.”

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Jaylien Wesley grew up immersed in gospel and church music. With a choir director father and a singing mother, JAYLIEN taught himself how to play the piano at only 8 years old, eventually adding saxophone and clarinet to his skillset. JAYLIEN first made a name for himself as a go-to producer and songwriter with “Beautiful,” a worldwide smash recorded by Akon. As a producer, JAYLIEN has worked with Chris Brown, Cody Simpson, Cheryl Cole, T-Pain, LL Cool J, Quincy Jones, will.i.am, and T.I., striking biggest with “Scream and Shout,” a top five Billboard hit for will.i.am and Britney Spears. Last summer, JAYLIEN impressed fans and critics with Summer’s Over, his debut album as a vocalist. Featuring singles such as “We Fcuk and “Hotel Costes,” which The FADER called a “perfect song for radio,” Summer’s Over racked up over a million plays on SoundCloud and convinced TIDAL to list JAYLIEN as an “Artist to Watch.”

EMPIRE Background

EMPIRE was founded in 2010 as an artist-friendly, progressive digital distribution company. After early success, and identifying future icons such as Kendrick Lamar, Sage The Gemini, and Rich Homie Quan, EMPIRE was quickly regarded as a tastemaker in the industry and throughout the past five years evolved into a full-fledged record label, distributor and publisher for independent musicians. With the company and roster growing at a breakneck pace, EMPIRE has effectively disrupted a stale business model by bringing its energy, expertise, and acumen to its artists and labels.
