 Critical Praise for Vokab Kompany:

“A sound who’s genre goes something like hip-hop, soul, electro, funk. You have two Emcee’s who charge sped up lyrical flows; made to sound effortless… seamless synergy with their voices and their lyrics are playfully vivacious and positive… layered with creative electro beats.”Sam Dorman NBC

“Vokab Kompany is another act that refuses to be pigeonholed. Two MCs might lead you to believe that it’s hip hop, but that doesn’t begin to tell the story. The seven piece band from San Diego played for more than an hour, a set that was at times funky, jazzy, heavy, bouncy, even bluegrassy… And it all made sense. Through it all, the crowd was treated to microphonic gymnastics of the dueling MCs, Rob Hurt and Burkey. The group is legit; see them.”Lindol French, Sacramento Press

The Song:

The West Coast’s own Vokab Kompany, comprised of Rob Hurt and Burkey Baby, is an MC/singer duo that blends hip-hop, electronic, and indie music, creating a sound that translates as a shout to the past and a taste of the future. Having generated a buzz with music featured in SoCo and KIA commercials, the group is prepping the release of their most anticipated project to date, The Good Kompany. With Canadian producer JPOD, they’ve released the album’s first single, “Kaleidoscope,” a feel-good collaboration equally suited for late-night dance floors as it is for an evening cruise looking at a colorful California skyline. “Kaleidoscope” premiered via EARMILK, who said, “different is good, and this one is beyond funky… get ready to feel sweet vibes.”

Vokab Kompany hails from San Diego with a sound that bends genres and reaches beyond the norm. Their live show combines multiple synths/keys with bass/drums and a violin to create a vibe that doesn’t adhere to a specific genre, but fits the bill with several. Their previous project, VKCE, a collaboration with duo Crush Effect, gained two national commercials and debuted at #47 on the iTunes hip-hop charts, behind only major-label releases from T.I. and Chief Keef among all hip-hop records released that week. With The Good Kompany coming up, fans have much to look forward to from the dynamic duo. Catch Vokab Kompany on their festival tour dates spanning their home state of California.

Vokab Kompany Background:

Vokab Kompany are two MC/singers from San Diego, backed by their 4 piece band of awesome. Their live show combines multiple synths/keys with bass/drums and a violin to create a sound that doesn’t quite adhere to a specific genre, but seems to fit the bill with several.

Their new album, VKCE, a collaboration effort with up and coming production/ musician duo Crush Effect (featuring members of Funk/Jamband legend Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe), fill a void at the intersection of the hip-hop and EDM worlds. VKCE is hip-hop, it’s electronic, it’s indie – it’s a shout out to the past, and a taste of the future. The record already has two national commercials, for a major carmaker (debuting 2013) and Southern Comfort. The album debuted at #47 on the iTunes hip-hop charts, behind only major-label releases from T.I. and Chief Keef among all hip-hop records released that week.

The team has been blessed with a slew of great press. In addition to a feature on electronic music in the August print edition of SPIN, and “climbing” George Washington Bridge with Al Roker, the band has won best hip-hop group at the San Diego Music Awards for three years in a row, and even impressed Prince Charles when he stopped by Solana Beach’s Belly Up to catch a VK show.
