Funk Volume’s Full-length Documentary Pulls Back the Curtain on How They’ve Become One of the Most Successful Indie Rap Labels Today

07.06.2014

The DVD:

Funk Volume’s intimate full-length documentary, Independent Living, will make its world television debut this Sunday, July 6th at 10pm ET / 7pm PT on Revolt TV. Filmed during the Funk Volume 2012 tour, the film documents the swift rise of rappers Hopsin, Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton, SwizZz and label co-founder Damien Ritter as they toured 44 cities in 50 dates. For the first time, Funk Volume pulls back the curtain on the philosophy, non-traditional tactics, work ethic, interpersonal relationships, and challenges they’ve traversed to reach their current position, which is that of a label to watch by fans and industry insiders alike.

Known for having one of the most solid and dedicated fan bases due to years of embracing of direct-to-fan tactics, the documentary shows the ways in which the label breaks down barriers between their artists and fans. As a result of these tactics, Funk Volume now has over 70 million YouTube views, almost 500,000 Facebook likes and gets consistent Top 10 chart placements on Billboard and iTunes. They recently released a free app for iTunes and Android users that offers tour info, interviews, music, exclusive content, and merch discounts, further strengthening their relationship to their fan base.

2014 has kept Funk Volume artists busy. Jarren Benton recently finished a 78-date tour with Tech N9ne and Freddie Gibbs and was included in XXL Magazine’s 2014 Freshmen class. Following label mates Hopsin (Class of 2012) and Dizzy Wright (Class of 2013), Benton is the third member of Funk Volume to be featured on the list in three consecutive years, the only label ever to do so. Dizzy Wright recently released two EP’s: his State of Mind EP and a 3-song EP, BrILLiant Youth, featuring 17-year old New York rapper Bishop Nehru, produced by Grammy-Award winning producer 9th Wonder. He is currently on the last leg of his headlining State of Mind summer tour hitting multiple dates in Florida before ending in British Columbia late July. Hopsin recently ended his headlining tour to support the release of Knock Madness and is gearing up to tour Europe in the fall.
