Today Complex premiered the latest visual for the track “Holla x2,” from upstate New Yorkrapper/producer duo The Doppelgangaz. In true Dopp fashion, they mesh a dark, gangsterish beat with witty lyrics and an entertaining video. The duo had some fun shooting the vid, culminating with ice skating for the first time in their lives. Matter Ov Fact and EP identify their most enjoyable moments of the shoot as avoiding serious injury and then being kicked out of the ice rink. “We almost kissed ice numerous times.”

The drizzly, chill “Holla x2” is the lead single from their upcoming album, titled Peace Kehd, to be released February of this year. Selling out a European tour after this year’s release of their latest album HARK, named the #2 Hip-Hop Album of 2013 by the Village Voice, the duo have built a dedicated following by spreading what they call “the Black Cloak Lifestyle.” “We do everything [ourselves] because we smell bad and people refuse to work with us,” the rappers jokingly explain of their independent career choices, like producing and mixing their own music and releasing it through their own label Groggy Pack Entertainment.

The Background:

The Doppelgangaz, comprised of rapper/producers Matter Ov Fact and EP, are a standard bearer for the New York hip-hop scene. Through the duo’s own label, Groggy Pack Entertainment, The Doppelgangaz have dropped a string of EP releases as well as instrumental projects. Its after these releases that the duo saw their biggest success – the Doppelgangaz have over one million YouTube channel views; they reached number one on HHV’s Top 100 list, Europe’s top vinyl retailer – and they’ve done it all independently. They wrapped up a European tour supporting their album Hark, released earlier this spring, and are now preparing to release their newest full-length project Peace Kehd dropping early in 2014.
