Standing strong at 500,000 YouTube views coupled with a million Soundcloud plays, Devin Miles is the latest self-made voice from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania challenging the status quo of hip-hop. However, contrary to local voices like Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller—the latter of whom has been a longtime close friend—Miles aims to show his personal Pixburgh, a complex view of city-life. “I’m trying to show people the depth of Pitt,” says the early-twenties rapper and producer, disagreeing with pop culture’s portrayal of partying, Steelers, and stacked sandwiches. His title, an homage to the regional dialect, represents a star who came from and thrives in a unique place and time. Fused with Devin’s most honest and courageous lyrics to date, the Fall 2014 release is candid snapshots of the artist and the man, immersed in his city.

Gifted in his craft, Devin Miles’ music often represents an Everyman. Careful and shy when he speaks, the Fab5Ent artist kept his songwriting private prior to his freshman year at Duquesne University. There, recording from his dorm through the night, the artist would make the songs that today he tours alongside chart-topping peers like G-Eazy. Miles’ works veer from simple smoke-inspired tracks like his 2011 breakthrough “Spaced Out” into deeper timepieces like Pixburgh’s message of encouragement, “Don’t Be Scared.” Calculated in his releases, Devin is dedicated to never being pigeonholed. “I never wanted to ever be compared to anybody that was out already. I’m my own person, and I always wanted to let those elements shine,” he says. “Everybody has a story to tell, and this is my story.”
In the hundreds of thousands of fans Devin has reached in less than four years, that list includes T.I., who notably shouted out the artist during an appearance on MTV’s “Rapfix Live,” and Juicy J, who worked with Miles on “S.L.A.B.” While the sensation welcomes the support and growing praise, he does not seek it. “Truthfully, I think doing it without cosigns is the best way. Because you know that every thing, every fan, every view, and every like that you get are genuine and legit.” Through his trajectory of releases including debut project Finding My Own, follow-up This Is How I Live, and 2013’s benchmark effort, In Due Time. The latter of those releases, co-sponsored by MySpace, achieved over 50,000 plays. However, in just the first half of 2014, ten times as many listens have been certified on Devin’s Soundcloud page. An early adopter to social media in his career, Devin has used the platforms wisely. “We were building fans outside the city at the same time we were building inside the city. That made it possible to get shows in other cities.” Since the very beginning, Miles has cultivated his crowd. “I may not have the biggest fanbase right now,” he admits, “but I know they are stronger and more supportive than some artists with more.”
Pixburgh sets to change that. With just one guest: Devin’s longtime collaborator and fellow burgeoning voice Hardo, the album keeps its circle tight. Miles’ lifelong best friend, Christo is among the producers stamping Miles—a producer trained under ID Labs in his own right—with a unique sound. Pointing to recent singles “Notice” and “GTA,” the artist explains, “The album has its own flare and style. We call it the ‘Industrial Sound of Pittsburgh.”
With no helping hand from the industry, Devin Miles and Fab5Ent have climbed mountains well beyond the river valley they come from. Pixurgh’s promise of touching on the rapper’s family life, adolescence, and current views on an exclusive industry will surely resonate with new audiences, as the devoted core that Devin interacts with daily propel him to be hip-hop’s next organic star.
