Critical Praise for Clyde Carson:

Barely contained hyphy beats — glistening with an element of sex appeal — are complemented by Carson’s gruff voice. It’s music for both clubs and cars.” – LA Weekly

The Announcement:

With a raspy sing-song flow and a knack for landing well-crafted hyphy anthems on the radio, Clyde Carson is a rap perfectionist. While today’s rap game can often appear to be a “who can release the most music?” contest, Clyde Carson takes his time between releases, refining and tinkering his sound until he is ready to flood Bay Area airwaves with new hits. Four and a half years after the release of Something To Speak About (S.T.S.A.) in 2012, Carson returns with Something To Speak About 2 (S.T.S.A. 2), releasing on January 27th via EMPIRE. Featuring appearances from E-40, Mozzy, Keak Da Sneak, YMTK, and 1Oak, as well as production from DJ Mustard, CT Beats, Drew Banga, and others, S.T.S.A. 2 reaffirms Clyde as one of the most impactful hitmakers on the West Coast–when he resurfaces, people take note.

Born in Berkeley and raised in Oakland, then various neighborhoods in the Bay Area, Clyde represents for the entire region. Clyde earned a basketball scholarship to the local Solano College, but his passions shifted in college from athletics to music. At Solano, Clyde Carson formed The Team, with Kaz Kyzah and Mayne Mannish, a respected hyphy collective with Carson as the lead songwriter. In 2002, the group began to release a series of sports-themed independent albums on Moe Doe, beginning with Beyond The Glory (later re-released as The Preseason), The Negro League, and later World Premiere, which peaked at number 50 on Billboard’s Top Indie Albums and number 95 on Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop Albums charts. The success of The Team earned Clyde a record deal with Capitol Records. After touring with The Game in 2007 and collaborating with Dr. Dre in 2009, Clyde Carson found his biggest solo success in 2012 with Slow Down,” a massive airplay hit off S.T.S.A. With over 13 million views on YouTube, “Slow Down” was the most played song on Oakland’s KMEL station, and reached number one on Los Angeles’ Power 106. Most recently, Clyde Carson released the Playboy EP, which featured appearances from The Game and August Alsina and production from DJ Mustard. Beyond music, Clyde Carson founded Hyphy Juice, a popular energy drink in the Bay Area.

To prepare for the upcoming release of S.T.S.A. 2, Clyde Carson shares Gettin’ To It,” the project’s first single. A ratchet club track with clattering snares, blocky 808 bass, and a hypnotic chanted chorus, “Gettin’ To It” is Clyde Carson’s latest radio ready banger. Featuring a slickly boastful guest appearance from raspy-voiced Oakland icon Keak Da Sneak, the Las Venus-produced “Gettin’ To It” is an example of Carson’s unique hitmaking alchemy. Premiered today by The FADER, “Gettin’ To It” reintroduces the listening public to Clyde Carson and is his first step to conquering rap radio in 2017. S.T.S.A. 2 hits stores on January 27th.

Clyde Carson Background

Clyde Carson may be deliberately strategic with releasing projects, but when he does unleash new music, he makes noise. As one of the preeminent voices of the Bay Area, the Oakland native has spent the past decade-and-a-half bringing the sound of his hometown to the listening public, both as a member of the foundational rap group The Team and as a solo artist, taking breaks between each single and mixtape to better bring his vision to life.
