WATA

Critical Praise for Chippy Nonstop:

“Upon first listen, it might be easy to dismiss the internet-obsessed Nanda’s debut offering #GLOBALSCHOOLOFTWERK as frivolous hipster party rap. Upon closer inspection idiosyncracies emerge: seething Hindi rhymes, crunchy dance beats, and a hyphy-inspired energy that help underscore Nanda’s unusual inspirations.” – FLAUNT Magazine

“She’s provocative, demanding of attention, while maintaining the casual-fun style of your old neighborhood crew. You can’t help but follow her bopping head and twerking booty for fear you might blink and miss the next step.” – San Francisco Bay Guardian

“The Oakland-based rapper Chippy Nonstop is incredibly easy to like and a surefire good time, but she’s far more than a pretty party girl with a great Twitter. She has great stamina and an ear for interesting sounds you can also bounce your butt to.”– Interview Magazine

The Song:

Following the release of her latest EP, #Finallyverified, and the electro-trap, bubbly single, “Peeka,”which Entertainment Weekly described as a song that, “perfectly sums up both her sound (club rap with an emphasis on regional styles like Bay Area hyphy) and her philosophy (which is YOLO to the extreme),” Chippy Nonstop returns with her latest track from her forthcoming untitled album, “WATA,” featuring rapper and Major Lazer/M.I.A affiliate Prince Zimboo, premiered by VICE’s THUMP.

Blending elements of Hip-Hop, Juke, and Dancehall, courtesy of M|O|D producer and Mad Decent/Wedidit affiliate C.Z., the track paints a lush backdrop of uptempo drum rhythms backed with 808’s and synths. On speaking of the production of the song Chippy reflects, “we just started messing around with a song that started off with a dancehall vibe and turned into more of a bubbling song in some parts. For people who don’t know, bubbling sounds derive from The Netherlands. Producers like DJ Moortje have a huge influence on a lot of the sounds I use in my own music.” With the echoing refrain, “‘keep it keep it flowing like the wata in the river, keep it keep it snowing like the weather in the winter,” these influences mesh together into a ball of energy Chippy has become known for. Matched with Prince Zimboo’s clever asides and puns, “Wata” is a perfect track for the club or for a summer time vibe. “Honestly, a lot of the song lyrics I write don’t have a literal meaning. I create most of my music for the vibe and the energy it makes you feel when you hear it,” says Chippy.

Born in Dubai to Indian parents, she grew up in Zambia and was granted Canadian citizenship before settling in Oakland and now Los Angeles. Her personal flair matches that of her music, combining dance, hip-hop, and world sounds to create an individualistic style which granted her opportunities to work with major artists such as Kreayshawn and Major Lazer, as well as Big Baby Ghandi and Main Attrakionz among others.
