The Song:

A gritty street emcee with lyrics for days, Boldy James embodies the blue collar spirit of his hometown of Detroit. On his latest single, Boldy evokes “Maserati Rick,” a legend in Detroit’s underworld, comparing his illicit wealth and outrageous swag of the deceased drug lord: “Fresh up out the clink I stepped out on the streets/spill a drink on my Italian leather seats/can’t name a n*gga in this city that’s as hot as me/they call me Maserati Ricky cause I got the keys.” Accustomed to rhyming over dark, grimy instrumentals, Boldy expanded his sound to incorporate elements of trap music on House of Blues, his upcoming mixtape. The new expansive sound is evident on “Maserati Rick,” as Boldy rides a twinkling, yet hard-hitting beat courtesy of Go Grizzly and Millz Douglas. Premiered by Passion of the Weiss, “Maserati Rick” follows the VIBE-premiered, boxing themed visual for “Do It.” A full return to form after the appetizer EP The Art of Rock Climbing released in January, House of Blues releases on February 27th.

Born in Atlanta but raised on the Eastside of Detroit, Boldy James interlaces staggering accounts of his impoverished hometown with piercing rhymes from his days moving weight into a signature sound. In 2011, Boldy James’ mixtape Trapper’s Alley Pros and Cons was named one of the year’s Most Overlooked Projects by Pitchfork, and after a follow-up mixtape in 2012, James returned with his debut album My 1st Chemistry Set, produced entirely by TheAlchemist. Following the success of his first album, Boldy James signed to Nas‘ Mass Appeal Records in 2014. His poetic flows and lyrics are on full display in his most recent project The Art of Rock Climbing, but expect some new trap flavors on House of Blues. Marking a new era for Boldy James’ sound, House Of Blues is an accomplished effort, with Boldy’s trademark lyrical grit co-mingling with new musical elements to create a fresh, modern take on Boldy’s Detroit street tales.
