Critical Praise for Black Milk:

“Black Milk’s solo career represents a constant cycle of adopting and mastering new production styles and then abandoning them before they become crutches.” – Pitchfork

“His samples are elegant, his rhythms challenging and his drum kits tight.” – NPR

“Cross has no need for these extras; in his world of soul-tugging productions and machinegun-as-velvet delivery they are merely distractions. On this realization, and in the moment, it was hard not be floored by the obvious: this is what talent with genuine poise really looks and sounds like.” – Dallas Observer

“Striking an impressive balance between being rehearsed and spontaneous, he proved his chops as a multitalented artist once again.” – Okayplayer

The Song:

Following the announcement of his forthcoming album, If There’s A Hell BelowDetroit-bred rapper/producer Black Milk returns with the latest release from the record.“Scum” is the fourth single from the album and features a reunion of Black’s former group Random Axe (Black, Sean Price, and Guilty Simpson). The track showcases Black at his finest as he flips through three beats, with each MC bodying a unique instrumental with their own 16 bars of brilliance. Last month Black Milk released the album’s third single “Gold Piece” with fellow rapper Bun B, a song Milk describes as a “story about how the only role models for young guys in the hood are the older guys that hustle on their blocks.”

Black Milk will be releasing his fifth studio album, If There’s A Hell Below, on Oct. 28. “I’m never one to say which album of mine is the best, that’s for the fans to decide,” says the critically acclaimed artist, “but at this point I feel like I’m making the best music of my career on a creative level and on a technical level. I think you’ll hear that in this new album.” The album will drop via Black’s own Computer Ugly label, and includes first-time collaborations with Blu, Bun B, and Pete Rock, in addition to appearances from past cohorts Random Axe, Ab, and Mel. Digital, CD, and vinyl pre-orders of the album are available on Bandcamp, where “Scum” will come as an immediate download with all advance purchases including the albums first two singles – the self-reflective “What It’s Worth,” the bouncy “Detroit’s New Dance Show,” and the aforementioned “Gold Piece” – are also available.

Earlier this month, Black announced Fall Tour dates with live band Nat Turner. Things get started this Friday in NYC at Webster Hall and includes an opening set by Fader Fort alum Wara From the NBHD. The tour touches down in several U.S. cities, in addition to a few dates in Canada during the tour. This follows a recently concluded European Tour, which Black performed throughout August. Speaking on a past tour, LA Weekly shared praises, saying “Master of Ceremonies Black Milk was expertly both directing and starring in this show.”

Black Milk Background:

Black Milk is a producer and rapper born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. As one of the most-celebrated auteurs of his generation of hip hop artists, he has conditioned fans and critics to always expect the unexpected each time he releases new music. Few producers have earned the notoriety and respect he has as a musician, and when that is coupled with commanding talent as an emcee, it’s no surprise that his solo releases are met with exalted anticipation. He has been making music professionally since 2004 and has collaborated with many noted artists including Slum Village, J Dilla, Elzhi, Phat Kat, Frank-N-Dank, Lloyd Banks, Canibus and Pharoahe Monch and Jack White of The White Stripes. In 2010 he released Album of the Yearwhich perfectly captured his soulful, jazzy style. His fourth solo album, No Poison No Paradise, is available now. Releasing October 28th via his own Computer Ugly imprint, If There’s A Hell Below, is Black’s fifth solo album.
