MP3: A-1 – “There I Go” (Prod. by Mr. Carmack)
Noisey Debuts the “Super Duper Hyphy” Single From the Bay Area Rapper’s Forthcoming Thurlian Album
Critical Praise For A-1:
“A-1′s style has a similar kind of funny, free-for-all feel as post-Mac Dre rappers like [Roach] Gigz, but has a sly rap style that is distinctly his own.” – The FADER
“Easily one of the illest emcees I’ve heard over the last few years.” – OkayPlayer
“A-1 takes an absolute monster of a Mr. Carmack instrumental and cowties it into something that sounds so vital and absolutely hyphy that it pretty much had to come from the Bay,” says Noisey in their premiere of the San Francisco rapper’s new single, “There I Go.” Keen to make noise in 2015, A-1 has enlisted some of music’s most forward-thinking producers for his forthcoming Thurlian album, including contributions from Mikos Da Gawd, Woostaar, Mr. Carmack, Sango, Kaytanada, XXYYXX, Ryan Hemsworth, Stwo, and Bear Face.
A-1 presents exuberant vocals and quirky bars in “There I Go,” rapping about fake shit making him look “poopy face,” using his free time to paint a mural, and doing after-school tutoring. In the track he declares, “I could teach class how to gas in this rap booth.” The slapping composition, driven by wet bass and hyphy claps, supports A-1’s goal to change the hip-hop game. The FADER recognized A-1 as a unique artist, stating, “A-1′s style has a similar kind of funny, free-for-all feel as post-Mac Dre rappers like [Roach] Gigz, but has a sly rap style that is distinctly his own.”
A-1’s upcoming album showcases his range of musical themes, from songs catered to be the perfect backdrop to a night of raging, or a thought provoking opportunity for reflection. “This project was inspired by my experiences while traveling, seeing different parts of the world and realizing that human suffering is a constant struggle everywhere,” says A-1. “As someone with a voice and a following, I feel I have the power to influence those who are willing to listen, and therefore I think I’m somewhat obligated to use that voice for good.” The album, Thurlian, is slated to release March 5.

Born Adam Traore, a first generation US citizen to West African and Italian parents, A-1‘s music is constructed around vivid stories of growing up in The City while searching for happiness and self awareness. After the release of After School Special, a mixtape based on 90s television shows, he gained a fan base through internet buzz while still living on his friend’s couch. Soon after, he released his follow-up The Book Of Adam which was received so well, he quit his day job the day after the listening party. With 2012’s The Thurl Tape, A-1 has been acknowledged by publications such as the FADER and Complex. Equipped with a heart filled with passion, an insatiable desire for creativity, discerning eyes and ears for quality, and a plan to spread his music to as many people as possible, A-1 is poised to be the first name in music lover’s iPods in the very near future. A-1’s Thurlian album will release March 5, 2015.
